Dallas Cowboys coaching staff loses key members, adds unproven HC

HOUSTON - SEPTEMBER 26: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, left, watches warm ups prior to a game against the Houston Texans with this sons Stephen, center, and Jerry Jr. at Reliant Stadium on September 26, 2010 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

From the get-go, Jerry Jones took his sweet time to make a decision on Mike McCarthy and doing so caused the Dallas Cowboys to miss out of key candidates for the head coaching gig.

As many of you have probably already heard, doing all of that caused them to also lose Al Harris yesterday to the Chicago Bears staff, and made Jerry make the most uninspiring hire since Dave Campo in 2000, maybe because there was just simply nobody left to hire!

My Thoughts

Before I get into maybe the worst hire for head coach I have ever seen, I hate that the Dallas Cowboys let Al Harris leave!

Harris was the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach from 2020 to 2023, then was promoted to assistant head coach in addition to his previous role in 2024. The former All-Pro cornerback has overseen some historic seasons from Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland over the past few seasons and is highly regarded around the league.

Going from the Cowboys to the Bears was once considered a major downgrade, but Harris saw a better opportunity in a better situation in Chicago. It was no guarantee he would remain under a new head coach in Dallas anyway.

Honestly, I was hoping that he would be made into the defensive coordinator for this team, but it just was not in the cards clearly.

Reports have been sent out that Mike Zimmer may not keep that job from a year ago, and it could be former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus. Crazy times we are seeing right now with the Dallas Cowboys, huh?

Brain Schottenheimer

“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones told ESPN. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

I can’t begin to tell you the anger and uneasiness I have about this hire. I understand that maybe he is liked in the locker room, but this team could not have just kept him as the OC?

You have a guy who has been with nine different NFL teams in his career and has only gotten TWO interviews to be a head coach, yet Jerry had no problem making this move.

Again, one more time, so it sinks in, Schottenheimer has been coaching since 1997, been around nine different franchises, and has a famous last name. The fact he hasn’t been a HC anywhere before is a huge red flag.

Not only did they hire him, and lose Al Harris, they also lost John Fassel earlier in the week.

This coaching staff went from half-way decent to one of the worst in all of football in a week.

Did Fassel and the special teams have it’s problem, sure, but let’s not forget that he helped both KaVontae Turpin and Aubrey become All-Pro players from the USFL. The Cowboys scored three touchdowns on kickoff or punt returns. They were only one of six teams to score off of a punt in the league.

This morning’s post is more of a reaction post because it is still very raw to see what is happening right now.

I want to hear your thoughts, both Brain and Dak are locked in for the next four years, and we may see the Cowboys struggle in a lot of games this season because they have a lot of moving parts, but a head coach who has no prior experience doing so.

I don’t see this team getting anywhere near the 12 win mark again anytime soon.

Expect the Cowboys to draft a running back with an early pick in the draft now based on the track history of Schottenheimer, but they are going to need a lot more than just that if they expect to win any games in 2025.

Cowboys fans should not attend any games. Jerry Jones is only interested in making more money as if he needs it! This organization is a complete JOKE coming from a Cowboys fan for 53 years!

I’ve been saying that for years, but as long as fans pack the stands, and continue buying merchandise, Jerry has no motivation to win any more Super Bowls.

To Jerry, Money rules, championships drool.

Then find a new team and move on. You have options.

For what reason? Can you say for a fact Schotty won’t be the best HC hire this year? No. You fools judge what professionals who are actually doing as if you know anything. The so callec analysts know no more either. Is Ben Johnson proven? No. Is Liam Cohen . No. I too am a 53 year fan of this team. Net and had dinner with Tom Landry and Roger Staubach for a school project. But I’m also an adult who understands nobody knows who will be a successful HC until it happens. Everyone made fun of the Dan Campbell hiring. John Harbough being hired at the time was laughed at and ridiculed because he had no experience beyond special teams. Fans need to grow up and stop whining. I would expect more out of an older seasoned fan.

His team. Not our team. Simple fact. Find a new team if you hate this so much. And for your information. Jerry’s not the one making these calls. It’s Stephen. At least be mad at the right person. Better yet grow up and move on.

Let the Cake Bake. Yes I wanted to keep Bones & Harris. Yes, red flags on Schotty. Let’s see if he can build a staff around him first. We needed a leader of men – Drill Sargent. Did we get one.? Let the Cake Bake……

Only common sense comment on here and the overgrown, dramatic children downvote it. Some of you need to assess you priorities and grow up.

I’m still not decided if hiring Brian Schottenheimer as the newest Head Coach is a good decision, but I’m willing to give him a chance.

From what I understand about him is that he’s well respected by the players and is considered to be master motivator. Those are two VERY important attributes for a successful coach.

The other is surrounding himself with a quality staff. This next part will be a little bit more challenging, as we all know that Jerry Jones will no doubt insert himself in this process.

We can all hope that this formula will work, but this is Jerry’s World, where anything and everything can happen.

And go wrong.

Brian may very well be a better HC than coordinator, but Jerry will set him up to fail by not giving him the authority he needs, and not infusing the roster with quality FA’s.

if players need an external motivator therein is a very big problem in the first place. And some games we see that lack of motivation already. millionaires needing to be motivated to earn their money…are you kidding me?

Another uneducated comment from a fan who knows nothing but what the media feeds them. Jerry isn’t making these decisions. That’s fact. Not a guess.

BTW. Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn and Liam Cohen are not proven head coaches anymore than Schotty. Schotty has more actual coaching experience than all 3 of them as well. He has more connections and has worked with more teams in more schemes. So logically all of the arguments are ignorant abd based on personal opinions. Not fact.

So a career assistant, there’s been maybe 2 teams in 20 some years who have even interviewed him for HC job, THE GUY’S LAST NAME ALONE SHOULD GIVE HIM HC INTERVIEWS

But that’s the thing, he’s a shit HC, no one in the league, who knows more than you and I, none of them wanted him for HC, besides Jerry, Stephen, and this clown organization, stop lying to yourself trying to make it seem like he’s on even ground or even more than these other HC candidates, he can’t touch them, but here we are

And hell yeah I’ll find a new team, I’ll probably become a Texan fan till the Jones family sells the team, it’s pathetic and it’s fans like you that allows this crap to go by and why we’re the worst franchise in the NFC currently.
