If the Cowboys trade rising star George Pickens before the deadline, they could land first-round draft capital to rebuild their defense, while re-signing Javonte Williams keeps their offense elite.
Dallas’ Surplus of Firepower
The Dallas Cowboys have a rare problem most NFL teams envy — too much offensive talent.
With CeeDee Lamb entrenched as one of the league’s premier wideouts and George Pickens quickly emerging as a top-10 receiver in his own right, the Cowboys have two legitimate No. 1 targets on the roster.
But with multiple extensions looming and holes on defense that can’t be ignored, the front office could face a tough business decision before the trade deadline:
Should Dallas cash in on Pickens while his value is at its peak?
The logic isn’t about giving up talent — it’s about capitalizing on it.
Why George Pickens Could Command a First-Round Pick
At just 24 years old, Pickens is under team control on his rookie contract, which makes him one of the most valuable trade assets in the league.
He’s a young, ascending receiver who wins at all three levels — contested catches, deep separation, and yards after the catch.
According to Fox Sports’ breakdown of 11 major wide-receiver trades, established receivers like A.J. Brown, Tyreek Hill, and Stefon Diggs each fetched first-round compensation when an extension was part of the deal.
That’s exactly where Pickens’ market could land. If a team agrees to terms on a long-term deal prior to the trade, the Cowboys could reasonably expect a first-round pick in return — or, at minimum, a strong Day 2 package.
Projected Trade Packages for Pickens
If Dallas played the market right — especially with contenders like Kansas City, Buffalo, or Baltimore needing receiver help — they could walk away with draft flexibility that reshapes their future.
CeeDee Lamb Makes the Move Feasible
The reason Dallas can even consider this? CeeDee Lamb. He’s one of the NFL’s most complete receivers, capable of carrying an entire passing attack. His route precision and yards-after-catch ability make him the offensive centerpiece.
With Lamb leading the way — and Dak Prescott delivering at an MVP-caliber pace — Dallas could pivot to a more balanced, efficient offense without losing its explosive edge.
Re-Signing Javonte Williams: The Key to Staying Top-Five
If George Pickens becomes the Cowboys’ most valuable trade chip, Javonte Williams becomes the team’s most important re-signing.
Williams has given Dallas the downhill running presence they’ve lacked since Ezekiel Elliott’s prime. His blend of power and elusiveness has balanced the offense and protected Prescott from heavy drop-back volume.
Re-signing Williams ensures:
-
Offensive continuity: His running style perfectly complements Lamb’s big-play threat.
-
Cap balance: Trading Pickens creates the space to extend Williams and maintain offensive depth.
-
Play-action leverage: Williams’ efficiency fuels one of the league’s best play-action games, sustaining Dallas’ top-five offensive ranking.
With Lamb, Williams, Ferguson, and Dak running Mike McCarthy’s rhythm-based system, the Cowboys can stay elite even after moving a star receiver.
How the Cowboys Could Use the Draft Capital to Build a Defense
Dallas’ defense has underwhelmed this season, struggling to pressure quarterbacks and stop the run. A Pickens trade could deliver the draft ammunition to fix that.
Key Defensive Targets (Using Pickens’ Draft Return)
-
Edge Rusher: To pair with James Houston and Osa Odighizuwa, giving Dallas multiple pass-rush lanes.
-
Cornerback: Depth behind Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland remains a need; another Day 2 pick could land a plug-and-play starter.
-
Interior Defensive Line: Reinforcing run fits would transform the front seven overnight.
-
Hybrid Linebacker: Adding a coverage-capable linebacker fits the modern defensive template.
Using one high pick and one mid-rounder on defensive rebuilds could swing Dallas back toward balance — the same formula San Francisco and Baltimore have ridden to long-term success.
The Blueprint for Balance
This isn’t a teardown. It’s team-building with foresight.
The Cowboys could trade George Pickens at peak value — potentially landing a first-round pick — and reinvest in their defense while still fielding a top-five offense led by CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, and Javonte Williams.
Unlike the Eagles or Bills, who acquired their superstar receivers through bold trades, Dallas would be the team selling high — flipping a young star for foundational draft capital while already possessing a No. 1 receiver in-house.
It’s the kind of move that separates a team chasing a playoff spot from one building a championship window.
If done correctly, trading Pickens could become the rare deal where both sides win — and the Cowboys come out more dangerous.
The person to trade is Ceedee. Ceedee will not fight for the ball as Pickens does . Ceedee is now becoming injury prone. Pickens is a better receiver overall than Ceedee and can be resigned for less than Ceedee. But, the real issue with the defnse is Eburflus . His system failed in Chicago where he was fired and is failing in Dallas. Make the defense work by changing coaches.
Pickens is not a better WR overall than Lamb!! And Lamb isn’t becoming injury prone either!! Everybody gets injured in football, it’s a physical sport!! The only reason Lamb is injured now is because a 245 pound LB landed on his ankle!! Every player that happens to will end up injured!! So we’re better off keeping both Lamb and Pickens!! And Eberflus’system didn’t fail in Chicago, he wasn’t even the defensive coordinator in Chicago!! But everywhere else he was defensive coordinator he always had a top 10 defense, so he’s a good defensive coordinator!! His problem is that he don’t have the players to fit his scheme, so he needs to change his scheme to fit the players!! He needs to stop running so much zone coverage and run more man coverage because that’s what our corners are good at!! And he needs to start blitzing more too!! And he needs to stop playing favorites and put the best players on the field instead of the players he wants on the field!! Jack Sanborn shouldn’t be a starter, Marist Liufau should be starting over him and that’s not been the case this season!! And he has the LBs playing in a position he wants them to play, instead of playing them where they’re best at playing!! So if he would change those things, we would have a better defense!!
Well said my man… ceedee is arguably the best in the league and him and dak have built amazing chemistry…. granted pickens is playing at an elite level right now but lets not forget who is throwing him the football. We got very lucky javonte williams is also playing at a very high level as wellcb3cause that run opens uo the pass game for out elite qb and wr core. WE POSESS 4 FIRST ROUND PICKS RIGHT NOW!! My personal take is this…. We have the best offense in the league right now especislly when we get ceedee back…. we have 4 first round picks we can use 1 of them and grab trey hendrickson and a 2nd round pick for a mean safety because thats what we need, we are giving up to msny big plays…. our whole division id in shambles right now! If dallas csn pull an elite pass rusher and get a good safety we instsntly stop the big plays, start rushing the opposing qb and we become a serious problem with an already elite offense! We become a super bowl contending team with those 2 pieces.
That sounds crazy. We waited to get a Wr 1 or 2 to go alongside Lamb to take pressure off him now you talking about trading him.
They aren’t making the playoffs this year. He’ll go elsewhere for more money in free agency after this season ends. Might as well get something back in return for him.
You don’t know we’re not making it to the playoffs!! We have the number one offense in the NFL, all we have to do is get Eberflus to change his scheme to fit the players we have and we’ll have a good defense too, and if that happens we won’t have any problems making it to the playoffs!! And you don’t know what Pickens is gonna do after the season!! He’s finally playing with a good QB for the first time in his NFL career, he likes it where he is, so there’s a bigger chance he would rather stay with Dallas!! So why trade him when we can extend him and keep 2 WR1s on our team!?
They are 2-3-1 after going through the easiest part of their schedule.
They have the hardest remaining schedule in the entire NFL still ahead.
Even if Eberflus makes the change, they do not have the talent on defense to consistently win games.
The offense will not score 37+ points a game as they have had to do in their two wins and a tie.
This team will NOT make it to the postseason unless nine NFC teams vanish from the face of the Earth and even then they’d be a one-and-done seventh seed.
Your bugging bro our entire dividion is trash right now. We can 100% make a playoff run if we csn grab hendrickson and a good safety
*You’re
As much as ivlike the sound of thst, we wont have the cap space to sign him next year. We can make a title run right now if we trsde 1 of our 4 first round picks and grab trey hendrickson, and trade a 2nd round pick for a decent safety thst csn protect the deep ball and play the run. We keep pickens, get those 2 pieces on defense, and we become a super bowl contender. Dak is playing at another level right now, williams really exceeded expectstions as the rb, and we hsve 2 number 1 wife recievers plus a great tight end. If we can get a pass rusher and stop the big plays against us we are automaticly a super bowl contending team!!
I agree Eberflus needs to change his scheme remember we had a top 5 defense a couple years ago with Dan Quinn. Pretty much have the same players just a different coach. We have good Corners in Diggs and Bland but we don’t use them right. I’ve always hated a zone defense to many holes. If you have good players you play man defense a zone defense takes away from your players strengths. And I sure hope they don’t trade Pickens with him CeeDee and Ferguson we have one of the best receiver groups in the NFL why would you take that away from Dak.
This is a
…a what?
Well?
We’re waiting…
I’ll finish his thoughts!! Dumb idea!! We already have enough money to sign Pickens and Williams, so why trade him when we can keep him and keep the best offense in the NFL!? And we already have four 1st round picks in the next 2 years, so we already have the draft capital to trade for defensive talent or draft them!! Plus we don’t need edge rushers, corners, DTs or LBs!! We have plenty of good edge rushers already, and we already have 2 pro bowl caliber corners, with a 1st round talent on IR just waiting to get cleared to return!! And we just traded for a run stuffing DT, that’s what we got in the Parsons trade, and we’re about to get one of the best hybrid LBs in the NFL back in a couple weeks!! So we’re good at all them positions!! The problem is that the players we have don’t do too good in Eberflus’ system!! Eberflus is a really good defensive coordinator, but he has a problem with switching his scheme to fit his players!! He’d rather keep looking stupid trying to get his players to fit his scheme, instead of switching things up and making his scheme fit his players!! With all the good players we have on defense, we should be a top 10 unit in the NFL, but Eberflus is too stubborn to change stuff to make it work with his players!! And another thing is, why would we trade Pickens when we can extend him and keep both him and Lamb!? It would be pretty stupid to let one of them go and end up losing the other one to injury during the season, and then we’ll be stuck without either one of them!! So we’re better off keeping Pickens and extending him!! And we have enough money right now to extend him and Williams, so there’s no reason to trade anything from our offense away!! They just need to tell Eberflus to switch his scheme to something that fits our players, or he will be fired!! That’s all we need to do to fix our defense!!
And why are you on here commenting!? You don’t even reply to comments made on your own articles!! Which if my articles were that bad, I wouldn’t read or reply to the comments either!! But still, if you can’t even reply to comments on your own articles, then you shouldn’t be on here replying to comments!!
And yet, there are nearly 200 examples of me commenting and replying to comments here.
Perhaps I save my replies for comments worthy of response?
My bank account does thank you for reading and commenting on my articles and my replies. You just bought me a very nice steak dinner. Gracias, amigo!!!
I love the interactions with the author of the article. Keep up the good work….. and the comments.
If it was between Ceedee and Pickens I would keep Pickens. The latter has shown far more ability than Lamb in what he has done after the catch! With Lamb you can still fetch a 1st round pick and snag a powerful defensive specialist from this 2026 draft.
That would be stupid!! Lamb is the better receiver!! And trading either one of them would be stupid too!! We already have four 1st round picks in the next 2 years, so we don’t need to trade either one of them, we can just use the draft capital we already have if we wanna trade for more defensive help!!
if they can get a 1st round pick for him it’s a no brainer otherwise he walks in the off season and you got nothing
Hey guys, this talk of T. Hendrickson with a hip injury is ignorant and speculative at best. Additionally everyone here commenting asking Eberflus to change this player set this one here move this guy here sounds like ” Monday morning; Tuesday and Thursday morning I’m a defensive coordinator Quarterbacking”.lol! Someone has 30yrs in the nfl the rest of us do not! Now about a trade of Pickens, if the Boys could garner a 1st rd pick to a team like the Giants, even better outside Div. Obviously but Any team that might because of record end up picking in the top 10 *Baltimore currently would be a fantastic outcome for financial reasons and Obviously could be a 1rd pick Jones Boys should use now to grab an edge rusher or capable LB. Which is a position of need far greater than safety on our defense. LINEBACKER both run/ coverage is greastest current need on this team even when Agent 0 arrives in a couple weeks! MAKE THAT TRADE NOW!!!
Did you just say trade pickens to the G*D D*MN GIANTS!!! Anything you say from that point on will be ignored because that was litteraly the dumbest suggestion i have heard in my entire life…. its right up there with the other guy who said to trade Ceedee lamb lmao. (YOU DONT TRADE PICKENS OR LAMB PERIOD!!! ESPECIALLY NOT A DIVISON RIVAL!!) alot of you guys either have absolutley NOO knowledge of football, absolutley no common sense, or they are poisoning your drinking water! We have the best offense in the nfl! You dont touch that offense especially the way dak prescott is playing football right now. You dont mess with something that is perfect!! George pickens is having a career year i can gaurantee you he will want to re sign with us. We have a serious shot at making a super bown run now that philly is just imploding. The only way that happens is if we pick up an elite edge rusher (even a half way decent edge rusher for that matter) along with a talented safety to help take away these big plays. We have some great talent coming back from injuries the next couple of weeks. Mark my words, if we can pick up an edge rusher and a good safety we will be making s run towards the supernbowl between the way this offense is playing and thebtalent we have coming back from injuries on defense. We have more than enough draft capital. ( 4 first round picks and 3 2nd round picks between the next 2 drafts 2026 and 2027) 1 thing about jerry jones is he is not afraid to make a move if we have a shot at making a run through the playoffs and making it to the super bowl.) LETS GOOO COWBOYS!!!!
Trade CeeDee. He’s the #2 being forced to be a #1… why he shrinks when it matters or when hes having a bad day. He’s good, but forcefed stats. I really think pickins is better. He’s the dawg we all wanted. He’s Irvin, lamb is Harper but a tad better. Keep both if we can tho ♂️
Follow up yall! Let’s keep in mind that yes having 2 wr’s this talented is a blessing. Of course Ja Williams has been a huge 3million move thats working out well. But this commentary was about trading Pickens early b4 deadline. It would be a departure from the norm for Ownership for sure, however undoubtedly defensively we have zero chance of making a playoff run without some major changes and not in scheme either although it would be nice to see changes. IR PLAYERS will help this team greatly on D. Guys like Carson and Agent 0 , and Butler but if trading Pickens nets us another 1st rd pick this year all while not getting into a bidding war to retain his services knowing who his Agent is mind you (same as Parsons)I believe that’s correct anyway would want a longterm deal for sure , would allow us in short order to use that pick plus remaining Cap Space to Acquire not 1 dude this year but likely two before nov4 paving a slight chance at a ” playoff” run at the Division and would set is up for 26 draft and the future with those (4) 1st rders everyone keeps reminding us about. WHAT SAY YOU GUYS? MAKE THE TRADE Jerry!
Oh hey in response to Xris……please re-read your comment comparing Ceedee Lamb to Alvin Harper!!!!!! On that team M Irvin was #1 dog for sure but an argument could be made that Kevin Williams was a better #2 than Harper (too many drops for Harper) unless that’s your exact comparison but even then Cee dee hasn’t ever been drop happy that’s our boy George P …..just saying!!! But man it’s great you brought back better memories thanks for that!!! LETS GO ….CRUSH WASHINGTON!!!!
