The Dallas Cowboys have finally found their defensive spark. Marist Liufau, Shemar James, and James Houston took advantage of more snaps and delivered energy, pressure, and production that reignited the unit in Week 5.

A Defensive Turnaround Fueled by Opportunity

After a sluggish defensive start to the season, the Dallas Cowboys finally looked alive again in their 37-22 win over the New York Jets.

The difference wasn’t a scheme change or a new signing — it was opportunity.

Three defenders — linebackers Marist Liufau and Shemar James, and defensive end James Houston — were given expanded roles and completely shifted the energy of the defense.

Their mix of youth, speed, and discipline gave the Cowboys what they had been missing: consistency against the run, urgency in pursuit, and pressure on the quarterback.

James Houston: Pressure That Changed the Tone

When James Houston saw his snap count rise to 26 total snaps and 23 pass-rush reps in Week 5, he responded with his best outing of the season.

Houston tallied 1.5 sacks, three total tackles, and constant pressure off the edge, finally bringing life to the Cowboys’ pass rush.

Over the last two games, Houston has logged 48 total snaps, becoming one of Dallas’ most efficient rushers. His closing burst and bend have consistently forced quarterbacks off their spots.

Through five weeks, he’s totaled 3.5 sacks, 11 tackles, and one forced fumble, proving that his speed-to-power blend can swing momentum on any drive.

Player Efficiency Snapshot: James Houston (Weeks 1–5)

Houston’s 14.8 percent win rate shows how impactful he’s been even without full-time reps. Every 13–14 rushes, he’s producing a sack — elite efficiency that gives Dallas a true game-changing rotational weapon.

Shemar James: The Rookie Linebacker Finding His Groove

Rookie linebacker Shemar James is beginning to look like the future of Dallas’ defense. Over the last two games, he’s played 85 defensive snaps, including 40 against the Jets — a season-high.

James delivered 15 total tackles (8 solo, 7 assists) in the Week 5 win, following 5 stops against Green Bay. His 20 combined tackles across the two-game stretch highlight his improving instincts and ability to finish plays.

He’s diagnosing runs faster, scraping laterally with confidence, and attacking downhill with authority.

Player Efficiency Snapshot: Shemar James (Weeks 4–5)

James’ burst and physicality have brought balance back to the Cowboys’ linebacker corps. He’s quickly developing into a three-down defender capable of anchoring the middle for years to come.

Marist Liufau: Quiet Consistency in the Middle

While the rookies made headlines, Marist Liufau provided the stability Dallas had been missing.

Over the first five weeks, he’s played 86 defensive snaps — 31 in run defense and 54 as a rusher — and produced 11 tackles (8 solo, 3 assists) with a fumble recovery in the win over the Jets.

His Week 4 PFF grade of 89.3 was among the highest by any Cowboys defender this season, proving that his intelligence and positioning are every bit as valuable as splash plays.

Player Efficiency Snapshot: Marist Liufau (Weeks 1–5)

Liufau’s discipline and communication have made him the glue of the front seven. His ability to fill lanes and prevent explosive plays has quietly transformed the Cowboys’ linebackers into a more dependable unit.

A Trio That Changed the Defensive Energy

Together, Houston, James, and Liufau combined for 29 tackles, 10 pressures, and 1.5 sacks in Week 5 — but their true impact was in tone. Dallas looked faster, more physical, and better connected.

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ decision to give the young defenders more snaps may prove to be the turning point of the season.

With their blend of energy and intelligence, these three could define the next phase of the Cowboys’ defensive identity.

I agree…. I’ve been yelling at the TV for Eberflus to take Sanborn out and put Liufau in all season!! Everybody knows that Sanborn shouldn’t be the starter, and I can’t figure out why Eberflus can’t see it!! But hopefully he realizes it after the game they had against the jets!! Now all we need is a replacement for the other LB and we’ll be good!! But as long as we can keep Liufau and Shemar James in as the starters, we should be able to get by for a while, or at least until Overshown comes back!! And we have a lot of good pass rushers, so we should be good there, but I do agree that James Houston should be getting more snaps since he’s been the best of the bunch!! And I also think we need to find a better slot corner too…. I don’t think Reddy Steward is as good as most people think!! I think we need to go and get Mukuamu back from Carolina and let him be the starter!! I know he’s better than Steward is!! But other than that, I think we’re getting better overall!!
