Jerry Jones on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine tried his hardest to downplay what the team has planned for wide receiver Michael Gallup.
“We don’t have a decision that we would like to talk about right now,” Jones said.
What They Can Do
As I’m sure most of you know, the production of Gallup has declined dramatically since his ACL injury he suffered near the end of the 2021 season.
Gallup had a career low with 418 yards, and touchdowns, he only scored two.
I really thought Gallup would thrive with Dallas, but after his one 1,000 yard season, things have not been pretty.
He is one of the best contested catcher in football, but we saw more of a struggle in 2023 than anything.
Cap Hit
Gallup’s cap hit for next season is nearly $14 million.
For the production he gave the team last year, they can’t justify paying him that type of money.
Jalen Tolbert out-snapped him in most of the games down the stretch, and paying him nearly nothing.
A regular cut of Gallup would leave a ton of dead money on the Cowboys’ cap.
Yet a post-June 1 cut would give the Cowboys $9.5 million in extra cap space with $4.4 million in dead money.
It is time to bounce him, we have seen enough since his ACL tare, and he is not getting back to having over 1,000 yards like he did a few years ago.
Trading Amari Cooper and signing Gallup has been one of the worst moves this team has done in recent memory.
Draft A Replacement
If this team is going to continue to get the low production from Gallup, just draft a rookie for 3x cheaper.
The Dallas Cowboys have the 24th overall pick in the draft in April, but man I would love to trade up and take Keon Coleman from Florida State.
Coleman would be perfect, as he is the cousin of CeeDee Lamb. “A dream come true!” Keon said of the idea of playing on the same team as Lamb.
Coleman recorded 1,467 yards and 19 touchdowns in his college career, most of which came over the past two seasons.
Brandin Cooks looks to be returning next season, and he was solid as the No. 2 behind CeeDee Lamb, but this offense just like the defense didn’t show up constantly against above average teams.
It is hard to sit here and think you have all the solutions as to how to improve this football team.
Does anyone actually think bringing back Gallup one more year after what we’ve seen the last two seasons would benefit them?
It’s starting to get old writing this same content over and over again. This team needs some changes, and from what it looks like it won’t be with the quarterback.
I am okay with signing Dak Prescott only because if you look around you can see how BAD some of the play is on other teams.
This team hasn’t won for 30 years, so it’s been a culture thing, clearly.
The Jones family cares more about when they will be featured on the media than winning games in January.
