Recapping a Busy Day for Cowboys Offseason News & Rumors

With opening next Wednesday, it's no surprise that the dominoes are already starting to fall. Yesterday saw several big developments throughout the NFL and the were among the teams making news.

The biggest item was Tight End Dalton Schultz getting the franchise tag. While this is being reported as likely just a placeholder amid contract negotiations, it eats up $10.9 million of cap space until a long-term deal is reached. The impact on Dallas' other goals is far from minor.

With Schultz getting the tag, will now likely become an unrestricted next week. The Cowboys are reportedly pursuing a new contract with Gregory but elected not to protect him with the , which would've cost nearly $18 million for a defensive end.

To be able to afford these moves and others, Dallas took the unsurprising steps of restructuring and 's contracts. Neither of these franchise fixtures took a pay cut; the restructure converts base salary into bonus money and actually increases their job security in future seasons.

Even with this move Dallas will still have to be judicious in its moves. Big decisions are still coming on potential cap casualties like , , and . Additional cap space will be needed to re-sign Gregory, , and other key .

One of those free agents is , but apparently he's already deemed unlikely to return. Anger's big season in 2021 has reportedly put him outside of Dallas' budget.

The Cowboys may already have next year's punter under contract in Hunter Niswander. He spent the year on following a back . While Anger did provide an upgrade last season, Niswander was solid in 2020 and could be a relative bargain for Dallas returning to the role.

Will today prove to be as eventful for the Cowboys? There are still many questions surrounding the roster and plenty of offseason ahead, but next week's start to free agency means we'll probably get a few more answers in the coming days.

Minor add – they also signed Noah Brown to another 1 year deal. Makes me wonder what Cedrick Wilson is asking for?

Brown is a vet minimum guy who is a good special teamer and can play WR in a pinch. Solid signing. Wilson will cost more (maybe 4-5 million per year) but is more of a pure WR who could be a good #3 WR for us. I hope we sign him.

How can Bryan Anger be out of our price range now?? Even the best punters don’t cost that much!! We’re paying over 2 million for a kicker that misses as many field goals as he makes, but we can’t pay that much for a punter that just went to the pro bowl for us last season?? That don’t make any sense!! We need to resign him!! Hunter mite have been decent in 2020, but he was out with a back injury, and we all know how things went with the last punter we had with back injuries!! We just need to cut Greg and use that money to resign Anger!!

Coming off a pro bowl season, Anger deserves and will cost more. And every dollar counts for us. Would love to have him back, but doubt he will be. I don’t think anyone wants Greg Z back.
