The Dallas Cowboys and veteran free agent Dontari Poe are reportedly in talks as of today. This news came quickly after another report that Dallas was looking to upgrade the defensive tackle position.
Poe’s was one of several names mentioned earlier today by NFL Network’s Jane Slater. She also included Ndamukong Suh, Damon “Snacks” Harrison, and Mike Pennel as potential Cowboys targets.
But within the last hour, Ian Rapoport indicated that the interaction between Dallas and Poe has apparently escalated.
The #Cowboys are in talks with FA DT Dontari Poe, source said. It’s not done yet, but could be by the end of today if all goes well. Another potential big-name DT who spent last year with the #Panthers. https://t.co/uP7W5kBaEQ

On Saturday I wrote about Dontari Poe as a potential free agent option for the Cowboys. While he is coming off a season-ending quad injury, Poe should be recovered by the start of 2020 and brings exactly what Dallas is looking for in size and skills at the “1-tech” DT position.
Dallas may turn to Mike Pennel, a former Mike McCarthy player in Green Bay, if things break down with Poe. He is another run-stuffing tackle but without Dontari’s pedigree or overall skills.
We should find out soon if Dontari Poe becomes our newest Dallas Cowboy or if the team will have to look elsewhere for a DT upgrade.
Just what the Cowboys need, as their run defense last year was, to put it mildly, not good. A huge, strong DT that eats double teams, will allow LBs to make plays, hopefully near the line or in the back field. And he also has some quickness to get to the ball carrier early. Not all that old either at 29. If this happens, the upcoming draft is starting to look like a BEST AVAILABLE type of deal, after picking a CB and maybe a WR, which would be awesome. Starting to thinks picking a QB maybe a good decision. They do not have a viable back up QB right now and to give some real competition to Dak. Also who knows what will happen with DAK, who is being unreasonable with his contract. I did a mock early today, at TDN, that still had Tua there for the Cowboys! Thoughts Jess.
