Remember how some people tried to defend the second round draft pick of Luke Schoonmaker back in 2023? Well, his ride is about to come to an end.
The Cowboys have a lot of players that will be battling for some roster spots this offseason, and nobody is more on the edge of losing his, in my opinion, than Luke Schoonmaker.
Schoonmaker has not lived up to his second round status after Dallas drafted him in the second round. He has a total of 438 yards and three touchdowns in three years, yikes.
You can’t expect to hold onto a roster spot with that type of production, and I strongly believe that a recent UDFA that the Cowboys signed will take his spot heading into the year.
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg out of Baylor, signed with Dallas as one of those undrafted free agents and if he keeps his stuff in check, he will make the roster.
Trigg had 50 catches for 694 yards and six touchdowns at Baylor last season, so it is not like he is walking in as a guy who never saw the field. The issue is his maturity, like I noted above.
He has issues off the field, and his ability to not be able to run block and dropping easy passes are probably the main reason why he went undrafted, because it seemed like every time I looked at the screen another tight end was being drafted. 22 of them in total, so some of these issues have to be legit if nobody gave Trigg a chance.
Rookie minicamp was last week for Dallas, and when the head coach says nothing but good things about you, I find it a good problem to have.
“We’ve all seen the highlight reel catches and things that he did at Baylor—it’s impressive,” Schottenheimer said. “You talk about a guy that can stretch the field vertically, and make game-changing ‘wow’ type plays attacking the middle of the field.”
Brevy Spann-Ford is the other tight end on the roster that saw playing time a year ago, and because he is such a good blocker, I don’t think he is going anywhere.
Brev has a package, his blocking ability is off the charts and, when you look at the film, provides more to the team right now than Schoonmaker does.
Jake Ferguson had a bounce back year in 2025, and made the Pro Bowl. He signed a massive deal the year before, and we wondered if it was going to be another bad deal, but I will take 600 yards and 8 touchdowns from a TE on this loaded offense.
This is a good problem to have on the offensive side of the ball when the best questions we are asking are about who will be cut rather than who is going to ball out on the defensive side. I think this team made a lot of progress this offseason and having George Pickens sign the tag after the draft and keeping him here for 2026 is bigger than people think.
If I had to make one bet on a UDFA making the roster and taking the job of someone, it would be this right here. The Cowboys are going to have to make some cuts later this summer, and if Trigg keeps it together and continues to ball out, Schoonmaker time as a Dallas Cowboys will come to an end.
Maybe this will backfire, but Luke just has not done enough in three years to be worth a roster spot when you have a guy like Trigg who can produce a much higher level if he keeps himself together off the field.
