If healthy, Devin Moore is a week 1 starter for the Cowboys

It will be a big if, but one guy the Cowboys pulled out of the NFL draft could have very well been the best corner in the country if he could have stayed on the field.

Devin Moore, the corner from Florida, was a 4th round pick by the Cowboys a few weeks ago, and slipped that far because of his injuries.

Moore endured some health struggles throughout his four-year stint at Florida. He missed a total of 20 games during his college career. His most healthy season came in 2025, when he only missed one game.

In 2022, Moore missed eight games due to a left shoulder injury. In 2023, he missed five games with a back injury and concussion. In 2024, he missed six games due to an AC joint injury in his right shoulder.

Cornerback Outlook

This was the most ideal spot for Moore because the Cowboys cornerback room might still be the weakest in football.

The good news is with Caleb Downs and Jalen Thompson, the secondary is much better, but they still need guys that can cover, like Moore and others.

DaRon Bland has dealt with injuries over the last two years, but as of now, is the best cover corner that they have.

They signed Cobie Durant this offseason, which is a sneaky good signing for Dallas. He was awesome for the Rams in the playoffs. Then it starts to get dicey.

Shavon Revel played a few games a year ago after he recovered from his torn ACL, but did not look the same as he did before that injury, and honestly, this is who Moore could steal snaps from.

Moore should be able to immediately fight for starting snaps. If he can show his 4.5 times speed will translate to the NFL, and it’s not simply the result of a particularly good 40-yard dash, Moore can reach his full potential in a defense that loves cornerbacks with his style.

The Cowboys’ defense is better than it was a year ago, but they are gambling with their cornerbacks and all the injury history, but as of right now they probably can’t do much better than they did this offseason.

The safety position got a major upgrade, and so did the defensive line. With Christian Parker now running the defense, he might have the best track record in football with the development of defensive backs with the work he did in both Denver and Philly.

Will McClay shares insight into why he and the Dallas Cowboys believe Devin Moore has the height and athleticism to make an impact in the secondary. 🔥

That is why I am not as worried about the current situation at corner for this team. Although it will have to be better, they have the best guy for the job doing that now.

As I noted before though, I really like Moore, but it is about half-and-half on him, some think he could a really good player, while others are taken aback by his injury history.

We will see how this summer goes, but if he can stay healthy and work his way through the offseason program, I don’t see why he is not a week one starter for Dallas.

The good news is, he’s never had a really major injury; more so, just a lot of little things that have added up in missed time.

If he can stay healthy all the way up to the season, it really wouldn’t shock me to see him starting out there in Week 1, alongside Caleb Downs in the nickel.

I am looking forward to the offseason now that George Pickens signed his tag, so all this drama can stop at least for now, have to give credit at some point to Jerry for actually trying to make this team better and doing it quickly and not dragging it out.
