2021 NFL Draft: Dallas Cowboys Select Oregon St CB Nahshon Wright

The Dallas Cowboys have selected Cornerback Nahshon Wright with a 3rd-round pick, 99th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 6’4″ corner just finished a two-year career at Oregon State.

This is the Cowboys’ fifth pick already in this draft and their third in this round. They were awarded this compensatory pick after CB Byron Jones signed a lucrative free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins in 2020.

Wright makes it a sweep for defensive picks so far in this draft. He’s also the second CB taken after Dallas selected Kelvin Joseph earlier tonight in the 2nd Round.

It’s no secret that Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn likes size in his cornerbacks and Nahshon brings rare size for the position. However, many will call this a reach as Wright was generally considered a late Day 3 picks by most draft analysts.

Welcome to the Cowboys, Nahshon Wright!

  1. All that lip service from Jerry and Stephen about all the draft capital and being able to move up for the players they have targeted. As usual, just talk. Not proactive at all. Just sitting and watching others scoop up players right in front of them. And not to mention reaching several rounds early on a prospect. Is a guy so good that you jump up a couple rounds early to make sure you get him? I hope so.

  2. This is a wasted pick if I ever seen one, this guy is slow, he is not physical and the only thing he has for himself is the fact that he is 6″4″ but he is also very skinny. Chris Westry 2.0 but at least Westry was fast. There were several other Cb’s available.

  3. Consider me one of the “many” who think this was a REACH. Hope I’m wrong. This fixation with the HEIGHT of CBs seems to be going overboard, IMO

  4. This pick was 100% about scheme fit. He’s stats aren’t all that bad actually. He had more INTs in college than Surtain or Horn. I think you nice this kid some developmental time and we could be proven wrong. He can sit and learn while Diggs, Brown, Joseph and Lewis are our starters. I’d still like them to add another DB or 2 in the draft and I hope we can get a safety today. Caden Sterns, Hamsah Nasirledeen, Damar Hamlin, Ar’Darius Washington, Jamar Johnson and Israel Mukuamu are names to watch as we enter day 3 among many other names in the S position

  5. In my opinion this draft should have been all about getting a few impact defenders at key spots to help this defense win this year. They had so much draft capital to move around and get the pieces they really needed badly. I can’t be terribly disappointed with the Parsons pick. We needed a linebacker with LVE and Jaylon having big question marks about their future, but man we really needed a top flight CB more IMO. The day two picks are where the question marks really get a bold font. How do they let the Jim Thorpe winner get picked right ahead of them with three third round picks in their pocket and they miss out in Barmore as well because they are not moving up. Those meaningless wins the Boys had down the stretch really came back to bite them on day one and two. This draft could have flipped the script for them on defense. Unless they have caught lightning in a bottle with some of these day two picks I am seeing only two players in this draft who have a shot to be an impact player and be on the team past their rookie deal.

  6. This 3rd round draft haul is a bust. All of these players would have been available on day 3. Getting another D3T, projected as a backup with 3rd pick?? It went downhill from there, all potential guys picked way too early. The Detroit Lions are making this front office look ridiculous….
Just a reminder…. the coaches on this team werevall fired recently for not being able to put good teams together. l will proudly not wear any cowboys gear today.

  7. Thank you Thank you Thank you Jerry. You did not disappoint!!!!! Been a true non wavering dedicated fan since ‘71. Since Jerry’s ego blew the Jimmy Johnson era and the opportunity for one of the most winning franchises that could have been in the last couple of decades; I have watched Jerry destroy any respect and competitiveness this team has had on and off the field. You did not disappoint this year either. Took a corner in the second round with a ton of studs out there waiting, that his own college coach said he just stopped wanting to play; and now he takes a corner in the third with still some studs at corner waiting; that will NEVER EVER step foot in an NFL game. EVER. Jerry still knows ZERO about the importance of the safety position and his entire staff are a bunch of clowns that can’t assess talent.

  8. Steve T, you are right about the character concerns with CB K Joseph. He has the tools to be very good, but the immaturity gives one a big pause. And N Wright is a big project at best. Also Cowboys have a big FIXATION for taking TWEENERS, as the O Odighizuwa pick exemplifies. So far this draft has been a very mixed bag at best. Hopefully they can somehow redeem themselves today.

  9. That was a stupid pick…. We still had Elijah Molden, Ifeatu Melifonwu and Ambry Thomas on the board and they choose a guy that would probably otherwise go undrafted or at best go in the 6th or 7th round!! Smh…. This draft sucks!!
