The Dallas Cowboys could get more offensive after the team moved on from Head Coach Mike McCarthy after the front office and coach could not agree on the team’s future.
In the aftermath of the move, the media has been predicting several coaches who could take over the job. Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Bill Belichick, and others are hovering in the universe.
The Cowboys have contacted Deion Sanders, Robert Saleh, Leslie Frazier, and Kellen Moore for the top spot on the coaching staff.
Of the names who have been contacted, the favorite is Kellen Moore.
Kellen Moore, Really
Several Dallas Cowboys fans who remember him as offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022 share this sentiment.
Here’s the thing about Kellen Moore: He is a Jerry Jones guy, and the comfort level with this potential hire is very high.
Not only is Jerry Jones comfortable with Moore, but so are Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
It is not common for a former coach who is familiar with several of the players to get the opportunity to return and be their head coach. Players who played for coaches in the past get brought in, but the ladder is not as frequent.
This can help the team not miss a step when they return to training camp because the offensive language, plays, and expectations will be familiar.
The other positive about this potential hire is that, since leaving the Cowboys, Kellen Moore has had two separate stops as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers and is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Oh, and we would be stealing a rival play-caller, and that is always a plus.
Kellen Moore’s Offenses
As the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Kellen Moore led one of the best offenses in the NFL.
Under Moore’s leadership, the Dallas Cowboys offense ranked second in total offense with 391 yards a game, scoring offense with 27.9 points per game and touchdowns.
The offense was third in first downs per game with 22.5, fourth in passing offense with 264.4 yards per game, fourth in third-down conversion rate with 44.1%, and seventh in rushing offense with 126.6 yards per game.
In 2023, Kellen Moore was hired as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers.
As the offensive coordinator, the Chargers were eighteenth in total yards with 5,559 yards, ninth in passing yards with 4,312 yards, and third in passing attempts with 632. The run game was not as good, ranking in the bottom ten of the league.
One of the reasons for the running game issues was the running backs were Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley.
The Chargers’ offense wasn’t great, but injuries to key players led to a down year.
This year with the Philadelphia Eagles is an entirely different story. Kellen Moore has shown he will change his offense to fit the weapons.
His biggest weapon is Saquon Barkley. This year in Moore’s offense, Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Eagles’ offense is one of the top groups in the league, ranking seventh in points per game with 27.2 points per game, second in rushing with 179.2 yards per game, second to last in passing yards and passing attempts, but seventh in passing yards average per game at 7.9.
These numbers show that Kellen Moore is capable of adapting to the players, and we have not seen that in Dallas in a few years.
This team would be dangerous if hired, and Kellen Moore could retain Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator.
Adding a running back through the draft to help out Rico Dowdle, if re-signed, would put the offense in a great position to be elite.
All in all, this may be the best hire for the Cowboys. He is a familiar face who knows what is expected from the front office, and he knows the players.
As much as several fans fear this hire, it could be precisely what is needed.
