With the Dallas Cowboys trading back on the opening night of the NFL draft, that leaves them with three picks on day 2 of the NFL draft tonight.
The Cowboys found a trade partner in the Detroit Lions. They received pick No. 29 and No. 73 in exchange for No. 24 and a 2025 seventh-round pick.
They still got a well-needed offensive lineman to help taking Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton.
Day 2 Options
Now that the Cowboys have three picks tonight, a lot of good talent is still there for the taking.
With all the craziness from last night, a handful of first-round talent fell to the second round.
Jackson Powers-Johnson, the center from Oregon, is still my favorite player on the board for what the Cowboys need.
Dallas has questions at the center. Do we want Brock Hoffman starting the year there in September? I don’t.
I would much rather have the best player at his position in the draft as the Cowboys’ starter next season.
His hands are fast, and powerful and works great in space. He has athleticism, he picks up blitzes well.
We know the Cowboys need help on the offensive side of the ball. They have to take a running back at some point today.
If a top notch defender is on the board in the second round, it might be worth the risk.
The Cowboys lost dang near every depth players on the defensive line to the Washington Commanders, so at this point, you may want to think about taking the best available players on the board in the second round.
Adding that extra pick from the Lions was a good move now that we sit back and think about it, but man it was hard to see them pass up Graham Barton from Duke. He was there for them, and made the choice to trade back and add a third round pick.
Offensive Skill Players?
Is Johnathan Brooks going to be there for them at pick No. 56? I am not sure. If he is, I highly doubt Jerry Jones doesn’t draft him.
He always opened his mouth and pretty much gave away that he wanted him.
He said this morning that Brooks was the best interview that he had of all the players in the draft this season. Which now means a team will steal him from Dallas I am sure.
If he goes, they could still get a guy like Trey Benson or someone similar.
According to reports this week, Zeke was back in the building and meeting with Dallas representatives. Good for him, but give me a younger back that has more in the tank.
The Dallas Cowboys have the worst running back room in football as it sits right now.
They will probably add a wide receiver today as well. Maybe with the last pick of the day.
Guys like Keon Coleman, Malachi Corley, and Troy Franklin are all still there to be picked. In an 11-personnel league, you can never have enough. Michael Gallup was cut, so someone will be needed for depth.
I could be here all day talking about who is left for Dallas to draft, but until the pick is on the board, we will have no idea who they might take.
The Cowboys have gaps to fill still, and having three picks today will help a bit.
Not sure if both of the third round picks will end up as day-1 starters, but with the way the roster looks, they may need to be.
I would like them to take another offensive lineman, running back and someone on defense today. I can live without drafting a WR unless a steal is still on the board.
