Cowboys’ DaRon Bland’s Reputation Is Better Than His Coverage

DaRon Bland walks off the field holding the football after another Dallas Cowboys takeaway.

I’m tired of DaRon Bland, tired of defending him, tired of waiting on him, and beyond tired hearing about his 2023 season like the Cowboys can use those interceptions in games this season.

I remember the five pick-sixes, and they were incredible, but Dallas committed $92 million to Bland on a four-year extension, and we are now watching a player whose recent production doesn’t come close to justifying that contract.

At $23 million a year on average, we shouldn’t have to keep lowering our expectations to find something positive to say.

I wanted to check whether the numbers supported how over DaRon Bland I am, and guess what? They do. This frustration goes well beyond one bad play or rough afternoon.

DaRon Bland Has Burned Through My Patience

In 2023, we know Bland had nine interceptions in 17 games. He allowed four touchdowns, a completion rate of 58.5%, and a 60.8 passer rating when targeted. He earned all the praise that season and for good reason.

Then he played seven games in 2024 and allowed four touchdowns without an interception. Opposing quarterbacks posted a 105.7 passer rating against him. In case you are keeping count, that is the same number of touchdowns as the year before, in 10 less games.

In 2025, he allowed five touchdowns and intercepted one pass in 12 games. Quarterbacks completed 62.3% of their throws against him and finished with a 103.3 passer rating.

Through Tampa Bay in Week 5 this season, Bland had allowed two more touchdowns without an interception. That puts him at 11 touchdowns allowed against one interception over 24 appearances since his breakout.

In the Tampa Bay game, he allowed three receptions on five targets for 91 yards and dropped a potential pick-six. That’s more than 30 yards per completion. We watched as the Buccaneers got nearly an entire football on three catches.

Bland had the chance to take the ball away, and couldn’t finish the play. I don’t want to hear about how he has good hands anymore. 2023 was three seasons ago, and now we are seeing opportunities hit the ground.

One interception in 24 games, followed by a dropped interception. Yet his reputation seems to keep him on this team like he is still a threat.

I Don’t Trust Bland to Cover Anybody Consistently

After the Tampa Bay game, Bland is at 18 completions on 26 targets for 273 yards. That works out to a 69.2% completions rate, 10.5 yards per target, and 15.2 yards per completion.

His completion percentage actually improved after Tampa. That’s how you wind up with a number looking a little better while the performance still leaves you pissed off. Three completions don’t sound terrible until you see the 91 yards from them.

What coaches in their right mind would see those numbers and not go after that matchup against Dallas. Bland hasn’t given any quarterback a reason to hesitate in years, and his past reputation isn’t going to make them look somewhere else.

For comparison’s sake, he allowed 7.9 yards per target in 2023, 6.4 in 2024, and 7.9 in 2025. Even taking into account that this year’s sample is smaller, the current results don’t give any reasons to feel comfortable with his play.

I don’t care about another touchdown celebration from Bland. I just want him to challenge a catch, maybe limit the damage, and finish. For the amount Dallas is paying him, why should that be the wishlist?

Dallas Needs to Stop Waiting on His Reputation

I know about the foot injuries. DaRon Bland played just 19 of 34 possible games in 2024 and 2025, with those foot issues costing him time in both seasons. That can help explain his massive decline.

But it doesn’t solve the problem we are seeing in Dallas now. The Cowboys need someone effective in coverage, not another discussion about being patient with Bland.

I’m done defending him because I liked the player he was in 2023. That player isn’t coming back, and you can try to blame the scheme, but he has had his chances and failed.

For $92 million, I’d appreciate a corner I can trust without a history lesson. Apparently, that costs extra.

DaRon Bland’s reputation is better than his coverage and that is one of the biggest issues with this defense.
