Let’s start with the good news. This was probably the best offseason and is the best at least since I have been alive, and I am 30 years old on the nose.
Jerry Jones got the Javonte Williams deal done early, traded up a spot in the draft to get probably the best defensive player in the draft, and traded for a very solid linebacker in Dee Winters.
Let’s not also forget that they have stayed out of the way, avoided drama and got George Pickens to commit to playing on his tag for this season.
I have to give credit where it is due, but in my opinion, and remember you can disagree, it is okay, but I still think they could have addressed two other issues.
Maybe they will. We still have some time before the season kicks off, but take a look below and let me know what you think.
Offensive Tackle
The offense is going to be a top 5 unit, but one major issue that folks should be paying attention to is the issues they have at the tackle position.
Both Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele are slotted as the two starters right now, and from what it has sounded like and looked like this summer, they are nothing but a placeholder as of now.
Schotty has said that both Nate Thomas and Drew Shelton, if they have a strong training camp into preseason that starts in about a month, could compete for their starting jobs.
As we sit here right now, I can’t even tell you that I trust any four of these guys. The Cowboys paid Steele after one solid year, which, of course, has done nothing but backfired on them because they always pay players way too early, or after they get paid they become below average.
The point is, I think they should have at least tried to grab a solid starter at either left or right tackle to par with Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe and Tyler Booker.
This was the one spot on offense I think they could have improved, but we will see how the rest of the summer goes.
Guyton has all the raw talent in the world, but that doesn’t matter if he can’t figure it out.
Corners Are A Question
The Cowboys cornerback room is not ideal, and if they have a major downfall, even with all the changes on that side of the ball this year, look for it to come from them.
Yes, Caleb Downs will probably play in the nickle a lot, but that does not solve the injuries that they are dealing with right now.
DaRon Bland, Revel and Moore are guys that are being held back because they have been injured, and I don’t even know if they will be ready for the start of the year.
They say they will, but can their body keep up with the speed of the game? Bland is going to be the best wide receiver of the opposing team every single game. How do we feel about that right now? No ideal.
I have no idea what to expect from these guys.
Despite the issues at cornerback, the Cowboys didn’t do much to overhaul the unit this offseason. That is why they are on the list as a major issue that they should have addressed.
While they decided to bring in three new safeties capable of starting (Jalen Thompson, Caleb Downs, and P.J. Locke), their biggest additions at cornerback were Cobie Durant and fourth-round rookie Devin Moore.
