Finally!
The Dallas Cowboys have added another kicker to their roster to compete with Tristan Vizcaino in camp.
Brandon Aubrey is the new man in town. He spent the past two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.
According to ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer, the Cowboys spent less time looking at veteran free agents like Robbie Gould or Mason Crosby.
Instead, they made a move signing Aubrey, a standout soccer player who attended Notre Dame and was even drafted in the first round of the 207 MLS draft.
Birmingham selected Aubrey in 2022, and during his first season, he was named All-USFL kicker.
In 2023, he made 14 of 15 field goals and made ALL 35 extra-point attempts.
He has real promise after playing soccer for the majority of his life.
Only being a placekicker for two years, he already has a nice little resume, even if it was in the USFL.
This is not exactly who I wanted the Cowboys to sign, but if it wasn't Gould or Crosby, a player like this was next in line.
Former Success
The Cowboys already found success in KaVontae Turpin last year. Turpin made the Pro Bowl as a returner in his first season in the NFL. The season after he won the MVP in the USFL.
Aubrey was released by Toronto FC in 2017; Bethlehem Steel cut him again at the end of the 2018 season.
He was named NSCAA Third Team All-American, NSCAA First Team All-South Region, First Team All-ACC, and NSCAA Academic All-American during his four years of college soccer at Notre Dame.
It seems odd that his contract was terminated by the Stallions just a few days ago, on July 3rd.
He seemed to kick unbelievably well for them in his two years there.
I don't know how the contracts work in that league. So they may have had to move on. Either way, the Cowboys got a guy who only missed once all last season.
The Cowboys report to training camp in Oxnard, California, on July 24th, and now we have something more fun to look forward to.
The battle between the two kickers is the biggest position battle Dallas will have if no other moves are made.
We all have a good idea about who else will start where outside of which wide receiver will end up No. 4 on the depth chart.
I tried to find some real highlights on youtube but had no luck.
The USFL website says Aubrey's long from both years he played was from 49 yards.
That seems a bit concerning. He will need to kick well beyond that range to make it as the kicker of the Dallas Cowboys.
It won't be long before we see how well he can kick.
This and who will emerge as the backup running back will be where my eyes spend most of the time in training camp and then into the preseason.
Let's give this kid a chance and see where it goes from here.
