Well, guess what, the NFL draft is over and it is time for the Dallas Cowboys summer offseason to begin.
Offseason voluntary workouts start this week, and players have already started to show up to the Star, but with that brings both good and bad things, so I thought it would be a good time to check in on what to watch for not only this week but as they roll into summer.
OTA Offseason workouts dates are June 1-2, June 4, June 8-9, June 11. Mandatory Minicamp: June 16-18.
So we have a ways to go until we get to that point, but I wanted to look at three things to keep an eye on at least for the next few weeks.
George Pickens
I think the biggest question after the draft and heading into these workouts is if George Pickens is going to officially sign that tag and show up to these.
It was reported last week before the NFL draft that he planned on signing it, which is why many thought a trade would be in place, but reports Monday say he has not yet signed the tender.
You know guys like Dak Prescott and others are already there, but it will truly tell us something if the GP shows up to a voluntary thing if he signs the tag.
He did not get traded at the draft, and it seems that he will play on the tag this season, which is a huge step forward, but it would be awesome to see him at the Star this week or next.
I have a hard time thinking that CeeDee Lamb will be there, but hey you never know, but Pickens has a little bit more meat on the bone this season and showing his face to something like this will not only show the Cowboys he cares, but also other teams that could be bidding for him next offseason that he is locked in.
The Draft Class
The Dallas Cowboys nailed the draft this weekend, and it is probably the best class in nearly a decade for them, and they stuck to the plan and got some dudes in the building that are going to help them from day 1.
Outside of Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, who are you going to be watching? Who are the guys that are going to impress and do anything they can to earn a full-time starting role?
The guy that I like the best is Devin Moore, the cornerback from Florida. The injury issues are a major red flag for him, but man, if he can stay upright and on the field, he would be a huge steal for Dallas in the 4th round.
Outside of that, we probably won’t get a huge slice of them this week or next, but each week it gets closer to August we will see which draft picks sign.
1st rd: Caleb Downs, DB
1st rd: Malachi Lawrence, Edge
3rd rd: Jaishawn Barham, LB/Edge
4th rd: Drew Shelton, OT
4th rd: Devin Moore, CB
4th rd: LT Overton, Edge
5th rd: Traded pick for LB Dee Winters
7th rd: Anthony Smith, WR
No More Drama
This offseason started so well, Jerry Jones and the front office made a trade, signed Javonte Williams early and just got to business and then, last week, he made headlines.
Bill Clinton crashed the redraft conference, they made news about George Pickens and, guess what, he never even signed the deal. Blowing smoke once again.
How about you get Pickens to sign it for real, get him in the building and stay out of the way this summer?
I am so tired of the drama. I am sure it will be another up and down summer, but please do us all a favor for once and stick to football even though I doubt that will ever happen with this front office.
