The Dallas Cowboys Will Have More Than Enough Trade Ammunition

The Dallas Cowboys Will Have More Than Enough Trade Ammunition
James D. Smith / Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys football team has a lot of needs on both sides of the ball. Sure, that’s pretty sad to say as a die-hard Cowboys fan, but it should make for a very interesting offseason. This front office needs to find a way to add talent in the draft, and probably in free agency as well, all while finding ways to keep Anthony Hitchens, DeMarcus Lawrence and David Irving, and extending Zack Martin.

Maybe they’re not able to achieve everything, but as long as they don’t lose all of these guys, they should be fine. We may even see a surprising release or trade. It sure would be interesting to see this team release Dez Bryant, for example.

Last year, Dallas lost Barry Church, Morris Claiborne, Brandon Carr and Ronald Leary… among others. But what do these four guys have in common? They all resulted in compensatory picks for the Dallas Cowboys’ 2018 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys got two additional fourths and two fifths. After trading up to get Xavier Woods in 2017, Dallas had no original fifth rounders for this year’s draft.

This is a front office that avoids making “big splashes” in free agency and in the draft lately, but I wonder if they’ll at least explore trading possibilities this time.

With three fourth-round picks and two fifths, they should have more than enough ammunition.

Dallas Cowboys VP Stephen Jones, Will McClay

This team has done a nice job in the last few drafts, and with Will McClay staying for at least one more year, they might as well try to get everything they can out of their draft picks. After all, Dak Prescott himself was a fourth-round compensatory pick.

Even still, I would like to see this team do something out of the ordinary.

Whether it’s trading up to get a well-fitting player who might otherwise go before their pick, or if it’s to get another team’s player, it would be interesting to see this front office pull the trigger on an interesting trade.

Sometimes it’s surprising what NFL teams can get with late round picks.

The Buffalo Bills traded away Marcell Dareus for only a sixth-round pick less than a year ago. I mean, how would you have felt if Dallas had gotten Dareus for just a sixth rounder? I would’ve been completely fine with it, to be honest.

The Cowboys have enough ammunition to consider pulling a trade-off in free agency or the NFL Draft.

We may not like the coaching, but in the past few years, this front office has done a good job when it comes to team-building.

We were all frightened when we saw the defensive players that were leaving in the secondary, and a season later, the young defensive backs are one of the reasons why we’re very optimistic about this team’s future.

So if they decide to keep their picks to themselves, I’d say it’ll be worth it, too.

After a sad season, at least we have an intriguing offseason ahead of us to keep us entertained.

Had you told me I could have Jay Ajayi for a 4th round pick this season I would have been all over that. A backfield with Elliot and Ajayi would have been pretty awesome. I don’t think the price for Kelvin Benjamin was so steep either. A third and a seventh and you can say the seventh isn’t much of a sure thing anyway so more like just a third. Of course he got hurt after. And Dareus for a 6th…come on man! Of course, a trade for trades sake isn’t helpful but a targeted player could be available…you just have to work the other 31 teams!

I hope we keep our picks. I hope our scouting is as good as it has been through the last 2 drafts. Rounds 1 through 4 are critical. That’s 6 picks. We can take care of spots that need addressing. Interior D-line, Swing Tackle, Lb, Safety, WR and CB…..and that makes 6. Will we hit on all of them? Probably not, but when you can get an Xavier Woods in the 5th round, then those 2 compensatory 5ths look good also.

I’m not one who thinks Jason Garrett has done a bad job. You have to remember, Jimmy Johnson had an Ace in his pocket (Herschel Walker) and a gullible team to bite (Minnesota). Even after the trade, Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 in 89, 7-9 in 90, 10-6 in 91 making the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Lost to Detroit in the wildcard. JC doesn’t have this luxury. When he became HC, he first had to rebuild an offensive line that was older and injury prone. This took time because he had to work against the salary cap that Jerry Jones had screwed up for years before letting some control go. Dallas finally had something good, but DeMarco Murray threw a curve ball in the plan and left for Philadelphia. Dallas could not match what Philadelphia was offering. Tony Romo kept getting injured from then on, with no way during the season to aquire a better QB. Dallas found both a QB and a running back in 2016. The Defense needed an upgrade because several players never lived up to there potential ( Claiborne is one), so in order to upgrade the defense, he had to go younger. He actually is doing he’s version of a Herschel Walker deal the only way he can. Solid drafts for the past 4 years. Now the WRs corp needs an upgrade. You can only do so much in one draft. And btw, Aaron Roger’s hasn’t exactly been winning Super Bowls either. He has exactly the same amount as Brent Farve, Brad Johnson, and Russell Wilson has. Until Dallas gets out of Salary Cap hell, and keep Jerry Jones out of the mix, there’s only so much he can do. And btw, when he was the OC under Wade Wilson, Jason Garrett coached the Dallas Cowboys offense to the 2nd best in the NFL. I’ll give you that’s it’s not been exactly pretty. But he’s had to rebuild this team with very few options to begin with. So if you want to blame anyone, it starts with the general manager who been screwing up everything since he fired Jimmy Johnson. And he’s been doing it every since. He’s played football but has never coach any school in his life. Oh if you count him coaching his son’s pee wee squad. Snoop Dogg did that. Tom Landry took 10 years before winning a Championship for the Dallas Cowboys. That’s fact! Dallas was established in 1960. They lost several times before winning there first. Truthful, Landry should have been fired in 1965 because he hadn’t even achieved a .500 winning percentage in 5 years of being HC. And until the Herschel Walker trade, Jimmy Johnson didn’t do squat either. Even after, it took 3 more years to just make a wildcard. These are all facts.
