The Dallas Cowboys have cut the roster down to their initial 53-man roster and, wow, does it look better than it did a year ago on the defensive side of the ball.
Still, they have one glaring issue on that side of the ball, and that is the cornerback room. It might get ugly.
Let’s get right to it. The Cowboys kept five CBs, with Ameer Speed and Caelen Carson currently on the 53. Devin Moore, the rookie from Florida, got put on IR to start the season, so that is probably why Ameer Speed made the roster.
I picked him or Carson to be cut when this came out, but it seems like because of that situation, they kept them both.
I would imagine the Cowboys will be looking for help either on wire or a vested vet, but the wire claims have passed, so I would have to think about being on the lookout for some news about them signing someone before the first game of the year in just about two weeks.
Anyone Worthy?
Let’s take a look at this, because here is the thing, the players that are free agents as we speak are free agents for a reason, but with Bland, Revel, Speed, Carson and Cobie Durant, the team is probably fine with the starters being Bland, Revel and Durant.
The issue is they have to add guys that can play for depth.
Dallas has looked into Adoree Jackson already, so maybe they reached out to him, yet he is not a good CB anymore. Marshon Lattimore has been unsigned since March, and working his way back from a season-ending injury, he isn’t the way to go.
The guy I would add if I were the Cowboys is Kenny Moore, the CB of the Colts. Moore is better in the nickle, and honestly has been one of the best for a number of years now.
If they added him, it would allow Caleb Downs to not only rotate there, but then they would not have to depend on him to always drop into coverage.
According to Over the Cap, his guaranteed money was $3,240,000. That’s a chunk of change to give up, implying the cornerback was extremely unhappy with the Colts.
Look, I don’t think this will happen, and he can really only play the slot, but if they added him for depth, at least.
The other possible thing that they could do is just straight up trade for someone, and as of late, Jerry Jones has shown that he will now make these moves if they need to be made. He had just started doing it, but to his credit, maybe he will do it again.
Either way, this unit is going to cause some issues if someone either gets hurt, or starts to struggle, etc. The starting three aren’t horrible, but they aren’t good either, and the moment someone goes down, and they need to turn to depth, they are in trouble.
DaRon Bland is not the guy that set the pick-6 record a couple of years ago, and he and Revel are hoping to be 100% away from the injury bug when the season starts.
Revel looked pretty good this summer, so my hopes for him went up a little bit, but that pressure hits hard when the first regular season starts and the games either end up as a win or a loss, hopefully no more ties.
And in case you missed it, the Cowboys released Joe Milton yesterday and added running back Emari Demercado.
This move was not shocking because of adding an average running back, but releasing Milton was not on my bingo card.
