Jerry Jones hints at hiring Cowboys legend as next Head Coach

A man in a suit speaks at a press conference, with a sports poster featuring Cowboys legend Jerry Jones in the background and a water bottle on the table.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: In a new live interview, Cowboys Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones sparked a fanbase frenzy with his comments.

Not only have we heard that before, but it feels like we’ve heard it a thousand times in the last few weeks alone. This time, however, it was regarding the potential coaching search Dallas will be on in a few months.

On 105.3 The Fan, Jones hinted at a future NFL head coaching career for Cowboys legend, Jason Witten.

Specifically, he compared Witten’s potential as a coach to that of Lions Head Coach, Dan Campbell, saying “He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now.”

It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots of what Jones hints at here. There is a real chance he would consider Witten, currently a high school football coach, for the top job in the 2025 offseason.

Let’s discuss what Witten as a head coach looks like, how realistic Jerry Jones is being here, and more after these latest comments.

Jerry Jones hints at hiring Cowboys legend as Head Coach

Jason Witten: Why and How He’s a Candidate

It’s been a while since Cowboys fans were following what Jason Witten was up to, but it seems like it may be time to start paying attention again.

The former All-Pro passed up on coaching in the NFL or in college in favor of leading Liberty Christian High School’s football team. Since that time, Witten’s boys are 35-11 with a 9-1 record this year.

That’s an impressive record, and we all know how difficult it is to win high school football games in Texas.

Is it impressive enough to make the jump to the NFL? That, I’m not so sure of. Does that matter to Jones, who could light the football world on fire by hiring one of his franchise’s all-time greats? I think not.

If you remove the Cowboys from the picture, a fair timeline for a Witten-NFL opportunity is at least five years. He’d likely have to make the jump from high school to either college or the pros first.

When you put the Cowboys back in the picture, his timeline could be just months away from making the biggest jump possible.

Jason Witten is a great football mind, a franchise legend, and a coach with a bright future. If you don’t think Jerry Jones will consider just those three things alone and consider hiring him, you don’t know Jerry Jones.

Jerry Jones: Stirring the Pot, or Serious?

Now, I don’t think anybody would put it past Jones to consider hiring Witten at some point. The real question is, is that time now, or is the media maestro himself just stirring the pot once again?

Above everything else, Jones wants to be in the news, and he wants to make sure the Cowboys have eyes on them.

Sprinkling praise of Witten in an interview, and mentioning that he could be a “top coach” in the NFL, is awfully interesting timing from Jones.

Everybody knows that Dallas may have a coaching search underway soon, and any mention of candidates is going to cause the kind of coverage that these comments are getting right now.

It is possible Jones did not have that in mind when he decided to give Witten this praise, but given everything we know about him, that may be unrealistic.

So, is this just another attention-grab comment from the Cowboys frontman, or is it a sign that this will be a real consideration once the offseason rolls around? The answer is likely a little bit of both.

I doubt that Jerry Jones had no idea his comments would catch eyes, and I also doubt that if Mike McCarthy is not retained, there won’t at least be a conversation about Jason Witten.

It may just be too early to know the truth, but with Week 11 in front of them, the countdown to the 2025 offseason is ticking.

At this point does it really matter? I loved Whitten as a Cowboy player but I’m not sure how the players would react. Like I said, at this point I really don’t care.

The only problem is Jones. He thinks he’s an NFL GM. As his last Superbowl was before most readers were born, done with two Hall of Fame coaches, it’s not that hard to understand where the disconnect is.

Bill B. As GM and let Jimmy Johnson come back and coach, and it’s possible it could happen Even B.B NOT BEING GM, but I see him or Jimmy in coach or GM Role, I think it’s some prepping going on Now and was talked about before the Dive down the Ranks… You will Always see the Cowboys and Steelers in the fight…

Ex legend or Not As much as j love some JW No college coaching experience doesn’t look Great at all for such a franchise to do that would be a Joke of a Move and to me also a little Disrespectful to some of the candidates that the team could choose from

The coach that Jerry hires must have these qualifications he can not compete with Jerry for facetime and the mic he must be willing to allow Jerry to tell him what player should play on Sunday’s ( why ) Jerry has to get the credit for turning the Cowboys around he be dam* if another Jimmy Johnson do what Jerry will never be able to do – raise the Cowboys from their death bedc

Jason Witten, as an individual player, was without peer. During his playing days, TE’s have come and gone, and he was mostly the only best option they had.

But there’s some good reasons for that: whenever up-and-coming youngsters were brought on board, it was his job to help mentor them; to develop them, motivate and inspire them. To the best of my knowledge, he pretty much left them to fend for themselves, with him as the lone beneficiary for playing time.

And the fact his career lasted so long is a testament to his toughness and football smarts. But this also served as a detriment by hogging the majority of game time snaps.

Despite his winning high school football records, can we really afford to have his selfishness permeate the team? I think not.

Add in the fact that he’s best buds with good ‘ol JJ himself and you have another “Yes-man” HC who’ll continue on way past his time.

Look at Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy. They both should’ve been fired years earlier, yet JJ still kept them around, simply because he has past regrets regarding the mid-season firing of Wade Phillips, despite the losing record and players giving up on the season. He’s on record for saying that in a past interview.

No, the organization needs a clean sweep from top to bottom, and that’ll only happen if someone richer than JJ buys the team.

But we all know that is not going to happen any time soon.

*sigh*. I’ll probably be dead and buried before the Dallas Cowboys win another Super Bowl.

This must be one of Jerry Jones diabolical jokes to reiun the cowboys for a first round draft pick that hard way.

Maybe Jerry could be traded. Jerry medals to much in his team’s affairs. He should step back and let someone else run the team. Jerry is the problem, not Mike McCarthy or Jason Garret for that matter.

Reminds of a manager I once had, I once recommended a person who was a beer delivery driver for a higher paying sales position. My guy worked out great!! So this manager figured he’d hire nothing but beer delivery guys from that point on…it was a very bad move to say the least!!! But just like Mr Jones he wanted those around to believe he had cracked the code and found the formula, just based on one guy that had worked out wonders in sales!! ‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️

Coming from a lifelong fan since birth (1975):

The sooner the other fans of the professional football team in Dallas (which will remain nameless) realize that the self-centered, egotistical owner and self-appointed “GM” (who will remain nameless) of said team is only in it for the notoriety, attention, and riches the better off we will all be. Due to the millions and millions of advertising dollars involved, the team will continue to flounder (i.e. hover around .500) as long as the team and owner are mentioned by name. When the team/owner begins to lose momentum in the game of notoriety and estimated value due to less publicity is when changes will become a consideration, and not a moment sooner.

Frankly, I think this is all a lot of supposition since it’s assuming that Jason Witten, who apparently turned down opportunities to coach at both the college and pro level and chose instead to take a position with a high school team, even would consider the HC job in Dallas if it were offered.

Just because someone may have the ability and talent to do something doesn’t mean that it’s what they want to do. Coaching a high school team provides a type of freedom and stability that he’d never have working at the college or NFL level and if that’s what’s driving his decision making right now then it seems unlikely he’d abruptly change his course.

Then you have to take into account how badly Jones wants to see the Cowboys back at the top. He’s desperate to get that team back to Championship status and I just can’t see him hiring anyone who has absolutely no experience coaching at any level in the NFL no matter who they are.

Now that’s not to say that he wouldn’t consider Witten for an Assistant coaching position or perhaps even a Coordinator position but to suggest that he’d hire him as the HC right off the bat seems pretty far fetched.
