Mike McCarthy back to his old tricks again

The Cowboys lost their first preseason game Sunday to the Rams, and there has already been an uproar of feedback from the play calling, I wonder why.

The Dallas Cowboys did not score a single touchdown against 90% of backups with Trey Lance playing three quarters of football. He threw the ball 41 times.

The play-call was criticized by fans and media, including analyst Mina Kimes on the broadcast of the game, explaining that was a low-percentage throw. The fact that the Cowboys were knocking on the Rams’ door with a dual-threat quarterback made it worse.

Lance missed Jalen Cropper in the end zone. Although it was a low percentage throw, that is a throw Lance had to make. You were a former 3rd overall pick.

Some things Never Change

What I mean by this is that big Mike has done the same thing in the last few years. He stops running the football.

He really made Trey Lance throw the football 41 times in the preseason opener. Like are you kidding me?

McCarthy agreed after the game that it was a mistake.

“That’s on me and the mechanics with the officials, there was miscommunication there, I wish I had that play call back,” McCarthy confessed to reporters postgame.

Here we go again. Mike McCarthy will cost the Cowboys a game or two again this season because of this stuff, and it can’t continue to happen.

It’ll Stay The Same

Let’s see how the next preseason game goes against the Raiders on Saturday, but I doubt anything will change.

I would like to see them run the ball a bit more, see what you have in the running back room. You don’t need Lance to throw the ball nearly 50 times in the preseason. He was the leading rusher on Sunday. That can’t happen.

McCarthy is coaching for his job this season, but Jerry Jones is not doing him any favors by keeping CeeDee Lamb unsigned.

It is hard to get mad at a coach who has won 12 games three seasons in a row. His offense last year was also near the top, but you can tell that sometimes his play calling loses them games.

He loves to get away from the run, and force throwing the football for some odd reason.

Week 2

I would like to see more running game during the second preseason game on Saturday. In addition to that, I want to see what Cooper Beebe’s got.

He got first team work on Tuesday, and to me, he is the biggest steal of the draft. He was fantastic in college.

I would like to see Jalen Tolbert play a drive or two. He for some reason was on the sideline Sunday.

He has pretty much locked up the wide receiver three spot, but if Lamb does not have a contract by the time week one rolls around, Tolbert should get all the work in that he can. Live game action in the preseason would help him.

Look, I am not trying to rip into him any more than I have, but he is going to have to be sharp with his play calling this season.

The running back room is the weakest it has been since they drafted Zeke, and if Lamb is not around, they are in trouble. They should still win 10 games, but it will be hard to keep pace.

Let’s see how big Mike calls the game this week, and we can visit this again. It is time to sink or swim, and with the way things have started after one preseason game, they had better get their life jackets out.
