The Cowboys’ lack of a running game is externally concerning

As the Dallas Cowboys enter this week against the Eagles on Monday night football, a lot of issues are lingering right now, and honestly a major part of the offensive problems the last two weeks is because they now refuse to run the ball.

Let’s be as blunt about it as possible. Over the next stretch of games, the Dallas Cowboys ground game needs to be better and if it gets better, that will start to open up things for the duo of wide receivers that they have on the outside.

The funny thing is, this is what Brian Schottenheimer is supposed to do well, just like his dad, run the football, and the Packers game, he had no reason to abandon it, and that’s exactly what he did.

Cowboys rush attempts per game:

2025: 27.4 (15th)
2026: 20.3 (32nd)

Cowboys pass attempts per game:

2025: 36.7 (3rd)
2026: 41.0 (2nd)

It’s pretty simple—Dallas needs to get back to running the football.

Major Concern

Let me throw a real NFL stat your way. In the last four seasons, when a team throws the football 50 or more times, guess the record? It does not matter if you have Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, or anyone else.

The record of those teams is 4-44. Four wins in the last four years when teams throw it that much, you have to be able to run the football, point-blank period, or you are not going to win many games.

If you did not see it last week, the Cowboys scored a touchdown with Javonte Williams early in the 3rd quater, and it was only a 10-point game. They proceeded to run 38 more plays after that and 37 of them were pass plays.

Like, what in the heck are you doing Schotty? Take a look at the tweet right above this if you don’t believe me, it makes no sense.

Williams, a year ago, is coming off his best season ever with 1201 yards and 11 touchdowns, and although he already has 7 scores this season, he only has 317 yards on the ground and through the first six weeks of the season has failed to rush for over 100 yards.

The Cowboys are ranked 30th in the NFL with 107 rushing attempts this season. It’s surprising, considering their vocalized interest in running the ball since Schottenheimer became head coach.

They have got to figure out a way to get the ground game going because you can’t throw the ball that many times and expect to win. The data shows us that it does not matter who you have at QB, it just doesn’t work.

Tyler Smith is back, and I understand the offensive line is in a bit of a flux right now, but you have got to figure out a way to get this ship moving, and no, not running CeeDee Lamb in a sweep. I hope to goodness we never see those calls ever again.

This week on Monday night, I don’t know what to expect, but this team has no excuse to not win this division, and if they don’t and Jerry Jones refused to make changes on this staff, as in getting rid of the head coach who should have never been a head coach to begin with, I don’t know what else it will take.

With the host of problems that the Cowboys have, is fixing the running game priority number one?

The Eagles’ depth chart right now looks like a practice squad, and even the Eagles’ defense has not looked that good and the next handful of games for the Cowboys are ones that should get them to the top of this division, but the way they have looked, I don’t even feel good about saying that, but when you look at the roster, they have no excuse!

We will see what happens, but the offense to get back on track has got to figure out how to get Javonte Williams rolling again.
