Ungrateful fans need to stop taking Dak Prescott for granted

Buy or Sell: The Cowboys are "putting QB Dak Prescott on notice," could draft a QB early

Quarterback Dak Prescott is completely unappreciated by some Cowboys fans for the things he’s done for Dallas.

As if it isn’t enough that every major media outlet is just sitting and waiting to spotlight every failure, he has to deal with it from Cowboys fans themselves.

You will never make me understand the absolute hatred that half of the fan base has for Rayne Dakota Prescott.

There are many reasons to be grateful for the player that has taken the field at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys since 2016.

Dak Prescott's rivalry with this division team is just beginning 1
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott celebrates a big play vs the rival Eagles

He’s Kept Dallas Relevant

Prescott has a 61-36 career record as a starter.

Those 61 wins are tied for 5th in the NFL since 2016 when he was drafted out of Mississippi State.

The quarterbacks ahead of him? You might know their names.

Tom Brady
Aaron Rodgers
Patrick Mahomes
Russell Wilson

That’s the list. The only quarterbacks ahead of him for wins since 2016 are four quarterbacks with Super Bowl rings.

Dak has never quarterbacked the Cowboys to a losing season.

The only losing season Dallas has had since 2016 was the 2020 season.

That’s the year Prescott suffered the terrible injury four and a half games into the season.

With Andy Dalton, Ben DiNucci, and Garrett Gilbert at the helm the rest of the year, Dallas finished at 6-10.

Aside from that 2020 year missed due to injury, Prescott has had the Cowboys in the playoffs or within one game of clinching a spot every season he has started.

 1
Cowboys’ QB Dak Prescott reaches for the endzone in a playoff game vs Seattle

He Commands a High Scoring Offense

I tweeted out a stat this week that has half of the fanbase fighting the other half in the comments.

You can throw some Philadelphia Eagles fans in the mix as well.

Ungrateful fans need to stop taking Dak Prescott for granted

This stat hit home for me as a fan who lived through the barren wasteland of quarterbacks between Troy Aikman and Tony Romo.

Here’s a list of quarterbacks in that time for reference.

Vinny Testaverde
Randall Cunningham
Drew Henson
Chad Hutchinson
Anthony Wright
Clint Stoerner
Quincy Carter
Drew Bledsoe

Scoring a touchdown in those times required an act of Congress.

We didn’t pray for a touchdown when a drive started. We just prayed the offense wouldn’t go three & out.

A field goal or touchdown was just a bonus, and it felt like we should have a parade each time Dallas actually got into the endzone.

Tony Romo was a breath of fresh air, but even in his best season, he never matched the 30.1 points per game Prescott has.

Dak Prescott versus Josh Allen debate heats up on social media
Dak Prescott and Josh Allen embrace after a game

He Is Not Turnover Prone

Dak resisters will look at this heading and probably scoff.

That would just be recency bias.

Yes, Prescott played in only 12 games in 2022, but somehow led the league with 15 interceptions.

Did you forget about the broken thumb that caused him to miss five games?

Dak broke a bone in the thumb of his throwing hand in Week 1 of the 2022 season versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Upon his return after missing five games, it was clear he was having some trouble with his control and accuracy.

To compound those issues, Prescott did not have starting caliber pass catchers at wide receiver.

This caused communication errors as well as errors in actual play. There wasn’t enough talent across the formation from CeeDee Lamb.

The vital improvements Dak Prescott must make this season
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott

His Playoff Success Is Better Than You Think

Prescott has played in six playoff games since 2016.

In that same span, only seven quarterbacks have more appearances.

All of those seven quarterbacks have advanced past the Divisional round, but putting all of the blame on Dak for not accomplishing the same is absurd.

Somehow the logic is the Cowboys win in spite of Prescott, but when they lose it’s all his fault.

Based off of 2022 rosters, there are 22 other starting quarterbacks who have not advanced past the Divisional round either.

We don’t hear a peep about them.

As Cowboys fans, let big media bash Prescott if they want to. I will continue to defend him.

If you are a Cowboys fan who wants Dallas to move on from Prescott, you need to reassess the situation.

Be grateful. We are fortunate to have this man leading our team.

It’s true!!

There’s such a double standard with our fans.

Our fans trash Dak but yet talk about Romo as if he was a legend when Dak’s stats are better and his playoff record in 7 years is the same as Romo’s record in 10 years.

Luke A Bass Romo never had the supporting cast. How many years did Romo have a bottom ranked defense? How many years did he play while we “built” our front line?

Dak is okay, it’s just Romo did the same, if not more, with simply much less.

Romo had prime Jason Witten, Prime T.O., prime Dez and Miles Austin and yes he had a great O line the majority of his career.. Dak has never had the offensive weapons Romo had.. When he first came in he had Dez who was finished, Terrence Williams, Cole Beasley and washed Witten.. And where’s this defense yall think Dak has had? Last year was the first good defense Dak has played with, and all he had on offense was Lamb, his #2 was Noah Brown a special teams player.. I know yall gonna claim Dak had Amari Cooper and he did of course, but only in home games.. Amari was a no show on the road.. All Dak had was Zeke consistently, stop trying to re-write history and act like Dak has had so much and Romo had nothing.. Dak has done way more with less

Austin Stidham Lol. Everyone always argues in Romo’s defense. No one ever says, “Dak didn’t sit at the feet and learn for a few years under an all time great like Bill Parcells and study with Sean Payton like Romo. And Dak didn’t have Terrell Owens and Jason Witten to throw to and then Jason Witten and a young Dez. Nope Dak was drafted in the 4th round and without any notice at all, he went from 3rd string qb to a 13 game winner and never looked back.

Austin Stidham the only years that was really the case with romo were the 2012/2013 seasons. Early in his career , the teams were loaded. Same thing late in his career , but unfortunately injuries cut his career and he didn’t get a chance to play with the 2015/2016 teams, which had a Super Bowl caliber roster. If you REALLY pay attention to how the fan base treats the two though, it’s very similar. Most the theories that ‘romo was a legend’ came about after he was gone. While he was here, the fanbase complained about him not being good enough to win the big games, choking in crunch time, etc. Same things they are doing with Dak now.

Austin Stidham Perhaps true, but for the record, I also see Romo for what he was: a garbage-stats guy that even his HC (Bill Parcells) said wasn’t the answer–but for some reason, fans wanted to pretend he was, and now his record his clear: no playoff legacy, no rings, no excellence. Just a big paycheck and stats that ran high because of rule changes and weak competition.

To me, Dak’s just the second coming of Tony Romo. After Roger and Troy, unfortunately, the team has never had anybody close to an elite QB again.

I think it’s pretty obvious why this segment of so called fans hate Dak Prescott the way they do and here’s why: (1) The majority of these people are Tony Romo fans and they still haven’t gotten over how Dak replaced him back in 2016. They thought Romo got a raw deal and should’ve got another chance to play once he was healthy. But the bottom line is the team already rallied around Dak, they were on a 10 game winning streak and as much as Jerry kept hinting at a possible Romo return, Jason Garrett did the right thing by sticking with Dak. And everybody remembers that fateful day when Romo held that press conference and relinquished control of the team to Prescott. (2) Dak Prescott is black. Let’s keep it real here. We’re talking about Texas. Go back through the history of the Cowboys and name me 1 other franchise QB that’s been black. Face it, there are people who just can’t handle the fact of Dak being the face of this franchise for this reason. Look at how they jumped on the Cooper Rush bandwagon, calling for him to permanently replace Dak, saying that “Rush is going to do to him what he did to Tony”. Knowing Rush isn’t anywhere near as good, they didn’t care. These people would rather fail with Rush at QB than succeed with Dak

If you know anything about football, unfortunately it’s the QB of franchises that take the brunt of loosing. Doesn’t matter colour, just stop. Michael Evans Romo was far superior at that time. The offense was setup for Romo to run. Dak could barely keep it going. It was based of the run for Dak. Both your reasons probably are a few people. But majority of us see a player who has never accomplished anything. Chokes in big games and then demands to be paid like he has won Super Bowls. Then gives us nothing. That is people’s problem. If he was paid like the average QB he is then people would have less of a problem with him.

David Dench

I think your logic is flawed. Dak has taken a beating from good defenses because jerra won’t pull the trigger for a good offensive line. Like most good cowboy quarterbacks down through history Dak is suffering the misfortune of being a star quarterback during the jerra Era. Just watch the archives of quarterback hits on ALL quarterbacks. Every star quarterback has had to retire because they had their freaking bells rung so much.if you’ll bother to check, you’ll see I was right. Because jerra thinks any quarterback who wears the star should be a wizard. Far as your mistaking statement, our front lines were, and still are overrated. When quarterbacks can only count on the average of 2.5 seconds before the pocket collapses around him, it’s a major miracle any quarterback since Aikman is not brain dead.
Both quarterbacks are great. The front office is the culprit. If you want to T off on someone, try jerra. I think I have watched a game or two in my day, from bullet Bob Hayes and dandy Don, on down Creg Morton and Roger Staubach, to Dak Prescott,. I’ve seen them all. I’d rate Prescott above Aikman simply because Aikman had the perfect team for 5 straight years. But jerra let his ego destroy the making of a true football dynasty, by firing a super bowl winning coach. Probably the only time in nfl history that’s ever happened. No my friend, the problem with the cowboys is not the quarterback, it’s jerra. Always the will be until the arrogant jerk forgets where the stadium is.

Michael Evans This is the most dumbest rhetoric I’ve ever heard. I could give two shits if he’s black. Dak needs to stop being ungrateful for the position he’s in. He needs to be clutch when it matters and he needs to stop under throwing and overthrowing wide open receivers. He leaves points on the field because of his inaccuracies. He’s a consistent QB In a lot of positive ways, but also in a lot of negative ways. I was a huge Romo fan and I genuinely feel if he had had this team under his belt we would be an NFC championships every year. Romo never had this kind of a defense and he had similar offensive weapons. Romo had his moments where he choked but that was also because he would get his team up to touchdowns to watch his defense fail him in the final minutes of a game. Then he was left too try to throw 90 yards down the field with a minute left in the game. Of course he was going to have a turnover in those type of situations.

There’s no excuse for Dak Prescott. Either make the throws or don’t be a QB. I would love for Dak Prescott to prove me wrong

Dak has been bashed the whole time he’s been the QB of the Dallas Cowboys and it’s pretty sad. Romo was good but not great and yes he had some very talented teams around him and couldn’t produce. Dak isn’t a Brady or Rodgers, but he’s a top 10 Quarterback in the league. And when he got paid, it was what the QB market dictated. It’s other quarterbacks that got paid that’s no where near as good as he is, they’re just a different color and don’t play for the Cowboys

Dean Turman so let me get this straight? You’re questioning the intelligence of Dak Prescott ability to read a NFL defense? That is the longest, oldest racist trope against the black QB, that they’re incapable of playing QB in the NFL due to their perceived lack of intelligence. It’s a good thing that you’re dead wrong

Rynie Rynie once again you suffer from recency bias. Dak has never been a QB to throw this many picks, that is fact. Go look at his TD/INT ratio. It’s top 10 all time so enough with the 15 interceptions. That was a anomaly, not the norm. Where’s your outrage for Josh Allen who led the NFL in turnovers and threw just as many picks as Dak did? Or how about this: Remember 2 years ago when the Rams won the Superbowl? Guess who lead the league in picks that year? It was Matthew Stafford with 22 but again he along with Josh Allen gets a pass from people like you and the media but want to trash Dak day after day after day

That’s 7 more years Dak will be the QB in Dallas and there’s nothing y’all can do about it except screech from the back of the room. You are in the minority in this fanbase which makes your opinion irrelevant. Hate on Dak all you want, it will not change the reality that he’s here to stay until he decides otherwise

Michael Evans guess you never heard of Quincy Carter. And the stupidity of those who call others racist when they know nothing about them is absolutely astounding. I’ve been a Cowboys fan since ’78. My favorite player of all-time is Tony Dorsett, followed closely by Emmitt Smith. Not Staubach, or Aikman, or Romo (love all of them, too) but TONY DORSETT. I’ve seen so many people like you with this self-proclaimed, profound wisdom to judge and condemn people of being racist because they don’t think Dak is that good. He’s ok, he looks really, really good sometimes, and other times he looks like straight trash like he did the last 2 years in the playoffs against our hated rival, the 49ers. He’s highly inconsistent and misses WIDE OPEN receivers quite often, i.e., Michael Gallup against San Fran last season. Pull up the video. WIDE OPEN. And while your at it, pull up the video of all the times he missed Amari being wide open. As a Cowboys fan of 45 years, I want Dak to lead us to a SB victory after not winning one in 25+ years, but he needs to play way better in the playoffs than he does. Gotta go now and put on my pointy white hat and gown and burn a wooden cross just cuz I don’t think Dak is great.

Dave Barker I call it like I see it and if that bothers you or makes you get up in your feelings, too bad buttercup. Out of all the players you mentioned in your little rant, the only one that you had something negative to say about was Dak Prescott and I wonder why? You profess love for Rodger, Troy Emmitt Tony Dorsett and Romo, but Dak is just “ok” in your eyes. He’s just straight trash, even though his numbers are as good or better than Romo. The difference between you and me is I support ALL and EVERY player that’s come through this franchise. I don’t dog, trash, ridicule anyone no matter if it’s Greg Hardy, Ryan Leaf, Quincy Carter, Terrell Owens, Randall Cunningham, none of them. You people have a personal issue with Dak Prescott because the hate he gets from his own fanbase is unprecedented. I hear the same nonsense from all of you regarding Dak. That he’s inaccurate, he overthrows or under throws receivers, he can’t hit a receiver in stride but the worse one I hear is that he can’t read a defense. Did any of you ever accuse Troy Aikman of not being able to read a defense? How about Tony Romo when he threw 5 interceptions against the Buffalo Bills on MNF, and 4 in the 1st half. Did you ever question his football IQ or is it just Dak? People say the game is too fast for him, he’s not smart enough to run a NFL offense. That is the oldest racist trope in the book about the black QB not being smart enough to process information

Michael Evans you never heard me get on Romo for bad games and int’s, I did. Especially the final one he threw in shootout against Manning & the Broncos. If he didn’t throw it we would have won the game and he would have broken the single game passing record. So, yeah, he got grief, too. You don’t know anything about me, or the people you accuse of racism. You seem to be the racist one throwing around unfounded accusations. And don’t mention Quincy Carter now because you forgot he was one of our QB’s until I mentioned it. I was a fan of him, too, even though he wasn’t all that. I thought he would become all that, but I was wrong. Guess you never heard how much I disliked Gary Hogeboom either, didja? No you didn’t. He was a WHITE QB of ours that was a bum who Landry replaced Danny White in a stupid move by the coach. I don’t only criticize the play and in-game decisions of black players. You’re a joke man. You call it like your racist eyes “think’ you sees it but your wrong. Oh, yeah…. I’m 100% positive you won’t believe this, but guess who one of my all-time favorite QB’s is and one who I’ve always said has one of the prettiest, tightest spirals and deep balls I’ve ever seen…. Jerry Jones biggest mistake was getting rid of coaches that knew what they were doing and trying to manage the team himself. Dak Prescott’s stats don’t matter if he can’t take the team to a division championship game. The Cowboys will never be great again until Jerry relinquishes control and they get a general manager that knows what he is doing.

Don Kiolbassa I think letting Moore go is a concession by Jerry to your point. However if Jerry was trying manage the team himself how is Dak supposed to overcome that? I firmly believe that the players have been trying to win despite management for 15 years and just couldn’t do it.

Mike Verebely ok? What was the score of the 5 int game? Dak threw 2 interceptions in a game decided by a TD. His choking azz got 9 points cause the punt team recovered a fumble on the 21. No TD from gagging Wak Prescott. Oh and he missed a wide open Gallup on what would’ve tied the game at 19 with 3:40 left. As far as how many INTs it’s a good thing Dre Greenlaw dropped that standard Dakky pick 6 or 26-12 looks a lot worse. Prolly woulda been better off running the last :14 seconds off the clock last year too. Defense gave him 2 possessions at 3:40 he went 3 and out but still got another chance. Sounds like a double choke last year

Last season , the base offense was a failure as it left the offense in 3rd and 7 or more 43% of 3rd downs.
Dak was sensational on 3rd and long all year…top 5…..and did it by being top 3 in throwing small window and high risk throws. He did that with one real receiver in Ceedee and otherwise had injured guys and rookies to throw to. Analysis shows about half the interceptions were off receivers hands or receiver errors downfield. That is why Moore is gone . Dak is +10 points above replacement even with just one real guy to throw to, terrible early down offense…that is a failed run game…and an offense line that PFF had as around #24 at pass blocking..
Thanks Dak !

Also, there’s the occasional exception like Peyton Manning and John Elway who doesn’t win until late in his career, but many (most, I believe) Super Bowl-winning QBs win within their first 5 years, certainly their first 7. Also, the really good ones win more than once in 7 years.

William T Clark Jr As to why it matters what Dak gets paid, it’s this: the salary cap. Dak’s contract was top-five at his position when he signed. It was and remains a substantial portion of the team’s salary cap. That limits the team’s ability to recruit elite and deep talent in the rest of the roster.

In other words, if you’re paid as a top QB, you need to PLAY like a top QB.

Players flocked to play with Brady. A number have moved to the Jets, the Jets for gosh sake, to play with Rodgers. Basically, a top QB lifts up the roster and improves the team–not just psychologically, but by being a magnet for other top talent. Exactly which top players have come to Dallas because they want to play with Dak?

Talk about completely missing the point. It’s not that Dak completely stinks. It’s that he’s not good ENOUGH. He’s just good enough to beat bad teams or average teams but not good enough to beat the good teams. In the playoffs the last two years he’s been abominable. His athleticism has never been the same since the injury. I like Dak. For a while there before the injury he was better than Romo. He has decent leadership and intangibles and still uses his legs a little, though not enough.
But he’s a loser. If Dak’s your QB, you cannot win or even get to a Super Bowl. He’s proven this. He’s 29 and on the decline. They should move on ASAP. He’s also not very smart. Aikman had a great critique after the ’22 playoff loss to SF: “Michael Irvin would’ve had 10 catches at halftime if they played us the way they played CeeDee Lamb in that game. The game is not that difficult. If I’ve got a great player at wide receiver and a corner is playing him in single coverage, throw him the ball.”

Mario, I appreciate that you wrote this but it won’t help. You said you can’t figure out why so many people don’t want Dak under center for Dallas.
The answer is extremely simple if you’re honest with yourself.
A large percentage has no tolerance for Dak because his skin IS NOT WHITE.
They may deny it but it’s really not much different than why so many of those same people would vote for a Donald Trump.
The “stop kneeling” aka “shut up and dribble” crowd will ALWAYS prefer a white QB.
The list of qbs between Aikman and Romo is telling in the fact that Quincy Carter is THE NAME that white fanatics will always refer to when talking about bad qb play when in fact Carter wasn’t close to being the worst plus he threw a beautiful deep ball. Racists won’t let facts stop their intolerance so that leads us to right now.
They don’t like Dak because he’s NOT WHITE.
A white qb with the exact same numbers as Dak would be appreciated in Dallas.
We live in a time where a governor of a state known for literally using black babies as GATOR BAIT is fighting tooth and nail to NOT have little white kids learn the truth about their ancestors.
These people have stopped pretending to like people outside of their race.
We need to learn to accept that truth.
It’ll clarify things in your life.

First of all, Dak isn’t what he was before the ankle injury. He was two dimensional before and defenses had to hold up a bit because he could run. Now, he is a pocket QB and Defenses know he is afraid to run and get injured again so they can bear down on him. If you are a pocket QB, you need time to read where your receivers are going, hence second and third reads. Dak doesn’t see the field fast enough and his line doesn’t give him enough time, resulting in poorly placed passes, throws into double coverage and interceptions. He would fare better if they would beef up the O-line

One of the few comments on this thread that isn’t trash. I don’t think he’s just an elite O-line away, though, Jeff. Be honest, now. If he had the #1 O-line in the league, do you think he’s in a Super Bowl? I don’t. The dropoff from Frederick to Biadasz has been significant and overlooked by the media, I grant you that (and Tyron of course isn’t what he once was). But even with Frederick and elite talent around him when he was younger and faster, Dak didn’t get the job done. He’s a middle-of-the-league QB.

Long time Cowboys fans, like myself and others, may be spoiled by the great past success our team has had. We may have higher expectations than some younger fans may have. If padded stats and above .500 records are good enough for some, that’s fine. Long time PATIENT fans want more.

Some fans like to constantly make excuses for the inability of the QB1 to live up to his second highest ever NFL at the time contract he greedily extracted from the FO. That contract hurt the teams ability to pay other players on the team and to aquire free agents, etc.

So they cherry pick obscure stats and bring up supporting cast deficiencies and injuries that EVERY OTHER team gets. Yet couple years back he had a superior WR group in Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Ced Wilson PLUS the safety blanket TE D Schultz. and TP and EE. Other teams wish they had that firepower.

Bottom line, 2 first round PS wins in 7 years, with at times, the BEST RUNNING BACK IN THE NFL, BEST O-LINE IN THE NFL, All Pro WR, All Pro TE, etc. Being the “leader” of the team, comes with added DESERVED criticism if the team doesn’t get to the BIGGER GAMES especially when you got the BIG MONEY CONTRACT. FO is partly to blame for this situation as they never gave QB1 any REAL COMPETITION. Competition makes a team stronger. Even the BEST QBs (think Joe Montana for one) where given REAL competition.

This coming year should decide a lot for the future of the HC and maybe even QB1 (who appears to hit his ceiling) on the Dallas Cowboys. Time will tell.

BTW, I don’t need to “reassess” anything on this player. The sample size is way big enough.

27 years and counting.

They need to end this Dak experiment, just like they ended the Romo experiment. They need to stop tying to find a diamond in the rough and spend a first round pick on a true franchise qb.

Gary Thomas the biggest problem is that we are already paying for a franchise QB. I believe his contractual demands are one of the biggest problems with his like ability. My 2 cents. He’s a good QB. Being paid franchise QB money.

Way too inconsistent for this cap space he takes up!!! Chokes the chicken when it matters the most, and it will only spiral out even more this season with a more competitive division. You can get someone else to do the same thing Prescott does in his dink & dunk 5 yard route offense for a lot cheaper! The back up QB was able to run that offense better than the starting QB with that style last year against quality opponents. I’m not sure we win those games with Prescott as the QB? Just to inconsistent week to week!!!

I would be interested to learn what he’s done for Dallas?
As I have watched hundreds of Cowboys games I have a good comparision. This includes a couple of live Super Bowl visits including their last win.

Some call it hate, I call it facts: he has done nothing. He is just not a good or great QB and surely no franchise QB. He had his fair share of decent games but the moment he snaps the ball I get really nervous as you never know what’s going to happen next. Most likely he flushes out of the pocket or throws an ever so slowly sailing ball to the sideline for 2 yds gain.

He needs to go. And please take Trevon Diggs with you as I’m tired of those long pass completions against the defense. He is very, very overrated. I think a lot of offense coordinators of opposing teams will agree with me.
