Why won’t the Cowboys take a chance on a veteran free agent WR?

March 12th is when the start of the new league year kicked off, and sure the Dallas Cowboys brought some depth guys in and maybe a starter or two, but nothing to scream joy about.

Over the weekend, Brandin Cooks signed with the New Orleans Saints, leaving the Dallas Cowboys with no true no. 2 guy behind CeeDee Lamb.

He signed for 13 million over 2 years. That is a contract that I don’t mind the Dallas Cowboys not paying, but yet this team has a serious issue behind Lamb, and it looks like they will be trying to use the draft to fix it.

I still think that they should take a look at a few guys on the market still and see what type of price they can bring them in for.

Tyler Lockett

Lockett spent the last 10 seasons with the Seahawks before being released earlier this month.

He tallied 49 receptions for 600 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games during the 2024 campaign. Lockett isn’t an elite player by any means, but he’s a dependable veteran who the Cowboys could really use in the locket and a guy that could help Jalen Tolbert and others.

The Cowboys don’t need Lockett to come in and have a 1,000 yards, just be a guy that teams have to keep an eye on when it matters.

The offense for Dallas is take CeeDee Lamb away and you win the football game. Heck, with Rico Dowdle gone, they don’t even have a threat of a running game right now either.

Lockett will be 33 years old in September. But in the short term, he would definitely be a solid addition to a wide receiver depth chart that desperately needs more talent.

Keenan Allen

Don’t want Tyler Lockett, fine, how about Keenan Allen? Another guy that would probably take a cheap deal just to continue playing football in 2025.

Allen, who will be 33 in April, finished the 2024 season with 744 yards and seven touchdowns on 70 receptions in his first year with the Chicago Bears.

Sure Allen is at the end of his career also, but would you rather have Allen or Lockett lined up with CeeDee Lamb & Jalen Tolbert over Jalen Brooks, Jonathan Mingo, or how about Ryan Flournoy?

I mean at least give this offense a chance. They will probably draft a guy in the later rounds and hope he hits.

The only way I would not sign Lockett or Allen is if they could get Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona in the first round, or yes I think it may be a reach, but I would also not mind them taking Luther Burden from Missouri.

Those are the only two guys that if this team takes, they don’t need to add another veteran wide out.

I don’t think this offense is going to be very good in 2025. They are going to struggle to pass the football. Lamb will have a top 5 production year again, but you can’t win in this leauge without another guy that can get his.

It is looking like another running back by committee with Williams and Sanders. It won’t work. We saw this last year, it was bad until they let Dowdle take over the load full-time.

If you made me pick tomorrow, I would sign Tyler Lockett and see what he can bring you for a one-year deal. Signing him does not make you any worse, and you add a guy that can still produce enough.

Do I think he makes the Cowboys a top 10 offense? Of course not, but he takes them out of the cellar, that is for sure. I guess we will see what happens.
