Well, preseason or not, I liked what I saw from a lot of players on both offense and defense from the Cowboys second and third units during their first preseason game on Saturday night.
I found myself watching the first drive of the night from the defense and thought to myself, Oh boy, backups or not, here we go again, but that was the first and only time the Seahawks would find the end zone on Saturday night.
Before I get into Camden Brown and what you might have missed from him if you did not watch the entire preseason game, the defense Saturday night, regardless of who played, etc. had 19 missed tackles in last year’s preseason opener with Matt Eberflus.
According to next-gen stats, they charted Dallas with only two on Saturday. Now Carson, the Cornerback fighting for a roster spot, still has major issues with penalties, but nonetheless, it was great to see.
Camden Who?
Yeah, I am sure some of you thought the same thing when Camden Brown, an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Southern, finished with three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns — highlighted by an impressive one-handed snag in the end zone — to help lead Dallas to a 17-7 win to kick off the team’s three-game exhibition slate.
Brown began his college career at Auburn but didn’t get much playing time through three seasons, so he transferred to Georgia Southern last year and played very well, catching 65 passes for 1,079 yards and leading the Sun Belt Conference with 14 touchdown catches. He said after his big game on Saturday night that he’s always confident in his abilities.
It got me thinking to myself, no way that he, if he hits waivers, he will make it back to the Cowboys unclaimed, so he could battle for the WR5 spot, or even have a chance to take WR4 from Jonathan Mingo, who also had a decent game Saturday.
The problem is, we know who Mingo is, and he is better than the guys trying to make a roster, but not good enough to produce against the starters in the regular season.
CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, KaVontae Turpin, Migno and Camden Brown are my picks to make the roster for the wide receivers.
I even had thoughts about the Cowboys looking to possibly cut Turpin, because outside his speed, he is not worth his contract unless he gets back to an All-Pro returner. They don’t use him enough in the offense, which maybe will change this season.
He had a down 2025, and he needs to get back to the guy he was when he signed that contract. I know it is hard to believe that a Cowboys’ player signs a contract that they probably weren’t worth, and then they just become below average.
I don’t want to overreact about one preseason game, but the Cowboys have a good problem on their hands. They probably have the best or second-best duo in the league at WR and if they could fill in guys like Brown who came out of nowhere, what a find it would be.
Two preseason games left to see where this goes. One thing I would like to see now is him get some work in the rest of camp and the joint practice with the Saints and see how well he does with Dak Prescott and the other first-team offense.
Overall, I liked what I saw on Saturday and you could see even the depth guys are better than a year ago. The offensive and defensive lines had it’s issues, but I think it was stuff they can clean up very quickly.
