The Dallas Cowboys have reported to training camp, and it kicks off tomorrow. Finally, I am looking forward to seeing some football take place from now until February.
As for the Cowboys, the media will finally be able to have full access and the posts will start to get a lot better, as we will get to see how things are going for the entire team, etc. But until tomorrow sometime, here is another thought I have about a Dallas duo that needs to set the tone starting tomorrow.
This defense was horrible a year ago, and now the defensive line is so much better, but they lack a true pass rusher, and I can live with that if they get production from some of these young guys!
Young Duo
Donovan Ezeiruaku is entering his second season, and rookie Malachi Lawrence needs to set a spark to training camp and show all of us that we don’t need to worry about the Cowboys not having a dominant pass rusher.
As for the entire defensive line, and I can’t believe I am saying this after just a year, they probably have a top 3 defensive line in terms of the bodies they have with Williams, Gary, Clark and others.
For the third year in a row the Cowboys are going to have a new leader in sacks. Last year it was Clowney, and before that it was Micah Parsons from the year he was drafted, and as of this year, I have no idea who is going to lead the team, but this young duo needs to bring some fire for them.
Last year, Ezeiruaku only had two sacks a year ago, but he was limited in what he could do as a rookie, and I am thinking he is going to be let loose by Christian Parker and this new defense.
Today, he took part in individual drills and worked on the sleds with the fellow pass rushers.
Matt Eberflus only blitzed 13% of the time, the least in the NFL, and sometimes you can’t generate sacks just by allowing a four-man rush to happen.
As for Lawrence, the most sacks he had in college was 7.5 in 2023 and last year he had 7, so Dallas is banking on him taking the next step in the NFL, and it is not out of the norm to see a guy do this.
Better coaching, better schemes and all that good stuff when it comes to the next level compared to college.
When it comes to realistic expectations, I will honestly tell you right now, I have no clue, but these two should play a bigger part in the defense than most want to admit.
Everyone wants that splash player, but sometimes it can be better without it, and it is much easier to have a unit up front that Dallas does now, led by Williams to make things easier on everyone.
This is not like having a running back on a committee where you never see it work. The Cowboys tried that one year with the wide receivers, and we saw how badly that worked out until they traded for Amari Cooper.
Either way, tomorrow will be a good day as it is officially the first day of camp and plenty of the media will be inside the building and real important info will start to fall off the tree.
I hope they stay injury and drama-free like how the rest of the offseason has taken place, and we will see what happens, but we have football from now until nearly March, which is just great for all of us football fans regardless of what happens from now until the end of the year.
