Brian Schottenheimer Is Running on Fumes

Brian Schottenheimer continues to explain all the mistakes the Cowboys have made, but hasn’t fixed any of them, even with having the time to fix them.

I keep waiting for the Cowboys to catch up, and every week, another opponent gives them something they can’t handle. How many post-game interviews are we going to get with Brian Schottenheimer telling us what needs to change?

I’m pretty sure we’ve heard them all by now, yet the Cowboys are 9-13-1 under Schottenheimer and 3-8 since beating the Kansas City Chiefs last Thanksgiving.

He has had a full season, an offseason, and six more games, but here we are as the rest of the league passes by, and we are stalled out on the side of the road.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer looks on before the game.

Brian Schottenheimer’s Play-Calling Is Terrible

We watched against Green Bay as Javonte Williams scored with 9:19 left in the third quarter to make it 17-7. Dallas called one running play the rest of the game.

Dak Prescott would finish the game with 54 pass attempts. Brian Schottenheimer said after the game that was not his plan or a good approach against that defense.

He calls the plays, and there were more than 24 minutes left when Williams scored. The team had time to keep the run involved, but Schottenheimer removed it, and we became one-dimensional with quick three and outs.

Why on earth would you make the game easier for Green Bay? They didn’t have to spend anytime trying to figure out what came next, they just pinned their ears back and blitzed.

The short passing game is an issue too. It seems like that is all Brian Schottenheimer has on his play-call sheet. Another issue with this is that George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb have no room to operate. They are getting hit as soon as they catch the ball. That doesn’t work.

Getting the ball out quick doesn’t mean a thing if the Cowboys are getting tackled at the line of scrimmage or behind it.

The Cowboys’ motion rate has plummeted since last year. CBS Sports found that Dallas’ motion rate dropped from 56.6% last season to 36.5% this season. We can add that to the list of things we are the worst at in the NFL.

Motion alone doesn’t make the offense good, but I want Dallas to make the defense adjust and communicate. Less movement and abandoning the running game leaves me questioning how much Schottenheimer is actually doing to help this team.

Opponents Are Finding Answers Before Dallas

This one hurts. Dallas had extra prep time before Green Bay and still lost miserably.

The Packers’ went into the game with the worst third-down conversion rate in the NFL at 27.6%, then went on to convert nine of their first 10 attempts.

We gave an offense that struggled to stay on the field a boost, and they did whatever they wanted to stay on the field. Whatever the Cowboys worked on during the break, it didn’t work during the game.

Baltimore exposed another issue: managing the finish.

Dallas had first-and-goal at the Ravens’ 2 with 23 seconds remaining, trailing by three. Then the Cowboys had an incompletion, a false start, and a Prescott scramble, and to put the cherry on top, Schottenheimer used his last timeout with 14 seconds left.

A quick third-down throwaway and Dallas settled for the field goal. I really think this team hates Javonte Williams.

Brian Schottenheimer owned up to the mistakes after the game, but I expect an NFL head coach to have better command of a team and the play-calling, especially when he will not give up the offensive play-calling.

It’s Groundhog Day or Better Yet Season for the Cowboys

Clock management is something Brian Schottenheimer must be allergic to.

In Chicago last season, Dallas called a timeout after the Bears reached its 10 with 30 seconds before halftime. Chicago scored on the next play. Dallas had no timeouts left and accomplished nothing before halftime.

How many times does Schottenheimer have to do something stupid before he learns from his mistakes? He’s had numerous opportunities.

And then there are the discipline issues. Dallas led the NFL with 133 accepted penalties in 2025, then had 11 for 108 yards against Green Bay this season. Schottenheimer acknowledged the continuing issue, but we haven’t seen any changes.

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of hearing that something was discussed then Sunday comes, and it gives us no reason to believe the discussion did anything.

Brian Schottenheimer’s Record Shows Dallas is Falling Behind

Five of Schottenheimer’s seven wins last season came against the Giants, Jets, Raiders, and Washington (twice). All four of those teams finished with five wins or less and in the bottom eight in points allowed.

When he faced teams who finished above .500, Dallas went 1-6-1. The Eagles were the only win for them against a good team.

The only two teams he has beaten that finished among the top six in points allowed are Philadelphia and Kansas City. Those wins showed Dallas can compete, but those wins are also irrelevant because Schottenheimer cannot produce any consistency.

Through Brian Schottenheimer’s first 23 games, the Cowboys are 8-2-1 when scoring at least 30 points and 1-11 below 30.

That scoring output and record leaves no room for an ordinary scoring day, and before one of you points out how bad the defense is, guess what, Schottenheimer should make changes to their too. He is the head coach.

This is why I know the league is passing by Dallas. Nearly every opponent finds a way to attack the Cowboys, and keeps doing it because Schottenheimer is immune to adjustments.

Brian Schottenheimer doesn’t have any accomplishments to support being this patient. I don’t need any more reminders that he knows what’s going on.

The only thing he has been consistent at is excuses, and those excuses have run out.
