If you missed the news, the Dallas Cowboys just the other day created $19 million dollars worth of cap space by restructuring three different deals with current players on the team.
The front office reworked deals for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson. Dallas had $15.9 million in room before they made these moves, which is massive, because remember when everyone said they couldn’t and wouldn’t make things better.
The entire cap space thing, to me, is still a myth in this league. There is always a way around it and ways to make sure you can free enough to make a move if the team truly wants.
So with that said, do the Cowboys have one more move up their sleeve?
Revist Maxx Crosby?
Look, it is not going to happen, but it is fun to talk about this one more time before the start of the season next week.
The Raiders and Maxx say he is staying put but if they did move him, the team acquiring Crosby would be taking on ~$30.7 million in cap charges from Crosby.
OverTheCap explains some options though:
“After the trade occurs, the acquiring team then has the ability to restructure the contract to bring the salary cap charge down. In Crosby’s case, they would convert $28.7 million to a bonus, likely adding a void year in the process, and save $22.96 million in cap room, bringing Crosby’s salary cap number for the year down to $7.822 million. However, that does not occur until after the trade. You need the $29.857M to execute the trade, not just $7.8 million.”
That was a very interesting thing to read, but it would take a lot of the right things to fall the correct way for this to even happen, so it is highly unlikely that we will see this happen, but wouldn’t it be fun?
Something else that I think about is. I understand that different things have to happen, but if I was an owner of a football team, and I could make it work, I would try and bring in as many players as possible, trade for guys, etc.
When you open cap space like this, do we really think they are just going to sit on it? Maybe they could use it to help with a George Pickens deal. Who really knows?
We will have to wait and see if anything happens to this or what the real reason was. I have also seen things there about maybe Christian Gonzalez, the star cornerback of the New England Pats. They have been far apart on a new deal all summer, and maybe he holds out without one.
I don’t see this happening either, but if a move were to happen with the cap space with the Cowboys where it’s at now with these new deals, these are the two players I would keep an eye on if they made a move.
Both of these guys would make the Cowboys go from middle of the pack to near the top in terms of defense. If you gave the option to pick between the two, I would go with Gonzalez. I think they need a lockdown corner more than a pass rusher.
I honestly think because the defensive line is so much better than a year ago, they will be able to stop the run better and get pressure on the QB.
The cornerback room is a unit on the team, and that is the way I would go with a move if you put the keys in my pocket, but we will see what happens.
