It might only happen a few times a year and normally toward the end of the season when the team is either playing for nothing or can’t make their spot in the playoffs any better or worse.
The Cowboys have a handful of players that are signed to the practice squad that I think should stay ready in case their number is called this season.
I am not saying they are going to come in and make an impact right away. There is a reason why they are on the PS. They still have a few guys that, because of depth or injuries, could find themselves getting meaningful reps sooner than later.
Justin Barron
This is a guy that I really like, and yes, it was just preseason, but he had a great start to it with that three interception game.
The linebackers that made the active roster over him were DeMarvion Overshown, Shemar James, rookie Jaishawn Barham and Dee Winters.
Keep an eye on James and Overshown. If James does not play well when given a chance or two, I would switch them out, and Overshown stayed healthy this summer, but can he do it for the entire year?
Barron is a good, smart, solid player in pass coverage, so he will help the offense prep for the week, but it is good having a guy like Justin on the PS in case you need a guy that can come up and play a handful of snaps right away.
I picked him to make the roster over James, but I am okay with either for right now.
Joe Milton
I am only putting Joe Milton on here because, if something happens to Dak Prescott, they are going to have him and Sam Howell. If Howell were to struggle in the very first game, I would sit with him and let Joe go.
Nobody thought he was going to be cut, then nobody thought Dallas would get him back, and guess what? Both of them happened.

Clearly, other teams do not value the preseason, and honestly I shouldn’t either, but if something were to happen to Dak Prescott, my guess would be that Joe would be called on very early if we see Howell struggle in his first or second start.
Michael Trigg
I have been high on Michael Trigg since they signed him as an UDFA and I won’t let it go until he is not part of the team.
At the end of the day, he is the highest-paid undrafted free agent the Cowboys signed in this year’s class, and after he recovers from his injury.
Trigg has a toe problem and hasn’t suited up since he got injured in the preseason Week 1 game, but my bold prediction is that once he is cleared and can return after another couple of weeks, he is going to find himself on the main roster and would cut Luke Schoonmaker if they cannot flip him for a late round pick.
This is all a guess, but maybe Trigg won’t make it there, but he is still one of my favorites until he is no longer on the team or the PS.
Someone else like Marcellus Johnson could find himself on the active roster from the PS if something happened to the offensive line. I still don’t trust anyone outside of Tyler Smith and Tyler Booker.
Either way, we will see what happens when the season starts, because you know guys are going to be disappointing, or they are going to get hurt, and they will have to dip into the PS, and these are just a few names that could find themselves on the active roster at some point.
