Now that the Dallas Cowboys’ 53-man roster is set for Week 1, we have a clearer view of the team’s strengths and weaknesses; they are carrying extra wide receivers and pass-rushers, while going light at linebacker, quarterback, and arguably on the offensive line.
Dallas also cleared a chunk of cap space this week, which many have speculated could be to address some of their areas of need during the season if a playoff run is in reach.
Here, I’m going to go over the Cowboys’ two biggest weaknesses as the season approaches and give you some options to watch out for as the front office looks to improve the roster throughout the 2026 season.
1. Cornerback Remains Cowboys’ Worst Unit
Depth Chart: DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel, Ameer Speed, Caelen Carson.
Most Likely Addition: Former Eagles CB and current Free Agent, Adoree Jackson.
Many have noted that former Wake Forest CB Caelen Carson is likely the 53rd man on the Dallas roster, meaning he is the weakest link/most likely to be replaced at some point this season. It is hard to argue that he and Ameer Speed won’t be under a microscope this year.
At the top of the depth chart, DaRon Bland and Shavon Revel provide hope for bounce-back years, but health concerns are always prevalent with them; Cobie Durant is set to be CB2, which is fine, but not at all great.
Adoree Jackson, a longtime NFL veteran who was recently under Christian Parker, consistently comes up as a potential name for Dallas to add, and I think they will at some point.
2. Running Back Is Questionable Behind Star
Depth Chart: Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, Emari Demercado.
Most Likely Addition: Arizona Cardinals RB James Connor.
I love Javonte Williams, and you have to respect Malik Davis’s ability to stick around when he’s being counted out of the roster, but Dallas’s RB room gets really shaky if Williams goes down with an injury.
Davis feels like a great change-of-pace guy, but not a bell cow RB1, while the recently signed Emari Demercado (who was connected with Cowboys OC Klayton Adams in Arizona) is even further from that kind of player.
If something happens to Williams, or the backups don’t feel strong enough midseason, watch for the Cowboys to consider another Adams connection in Cardinals veteran James Connor, who is on IR right now and will be on the outside looking in for snaps once he is fully healthy.
