Cowboys are top heavy at WR, who rounds out the group?

As I make my rounds looking at the Dallas Cowboys depth chart, we should now understand that they probably have the best wide receiver duo in all of football outside the Bengals.

Still, with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy and Jonathan Mingo, but are we sure that Mingo would beat out the others on the roster to make the final 53? I am not so sure about that.

The first question is are they going to keep five or six wide receivers? My first thought is that they will probably keep only five, but you could make the case due to the workload of Lamb and Pickens, both probably going to go over 1,500 yards. Maybe keeping six wouldn’t be bad.

Now, what will probably happen is they keep five and sign one to the practice squad or something similar, etc.

5th WR?

Right off the jump most people would think Mingo is a lock and the other guys are just bodies for training camp, which could be true, but let’s wait and see.

His competition includes seventh-round pick Anthony Smith, veterans Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Tyler Johnson, reserve/future players Traeshon Holden, and a guy who is on the list for the Canadian Football League, Denzel Mims.

The guy that I have seen the most argument for is Smith.

The following Cowboys have signed their rookie contracts:

First round: Caleb Downs, DB
Third round: Jaishawn Barham, LB/Edge
Fourth round: Drew Shelton, OT
Fourth round: Devin Moore, CB
Fourth round: LT Overton, Edge
Seventh round: Anthony Smith, WR

Smith was drafted out of East Carolina and had an impressive final season of college football in 2025 before entering the draft. He totaled 65 catches for 1,053 yards and seven touchdowns for the Pirates, showcasing his big-play ability with 20 receptions that went for 15 or more yards.

It is nearly impossible to try and say who is going to make the roster this early without training camp yet, but tell me what he can’t do that Mingo has done since the Cowboys traded a 4th round pick for him?

Listen, since being traded, Mingo has a grand total of 21 targets, SIX catches and three touchdowns. I mean, really?

You can’t tell me that he is locked to be the WR5 on the roster if they only keep five of them in the final 53.

How about Marquez Valdes-Scantling? The guy has been a time or two, and his best days are clearly behind him, but has the same amount of production the last two years as Mingo. He had 120 yards last year on 14 catches and one score.

All I am saying is that if Lamb or Pickens go down, someone is going to have to step up and maybe play more snaps than they are used to, and that is okay.

The good news is, Flournoy will probably be the best WR3 in football, and Dallas might get three guys over the 1k yards mark with how good the offense should be once again in 2026.

I think this is a good problem to have when it comes to the Cowboys. Remember when they tried the whole running back by committee thing once and how bad that turned out? Just think of the times we had to talk about who would do what, etc.

#Cowboys WRs CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens drew 16 DPI calls last season for a combined 241 yards.

They were No. 2 and No. 3 respectively in DPI Yards drawn via @TruMediaSports

Thinking about who could step up and be the WR5 or 6 is a great question to be asking in the middle of July, and with no Jerry Jones drama it makes it even better.

For the first time since I can remember, we are getting to dive deep into topics like this because we don’t have to put out updates about what Jerry said this week and GP showing up and signing that tag was the worst thing to happen to the media.

They hate the fact that they can’t talk about the Dallas Cowboys and all the drama, but for a big fan like myself, it makes it feel so good for once.
