The Dallas Cowboys got to work yesterday, trimming their 2023 roster down to 53 players.
The NFL deadline to cut the roster to 53 hit at 3:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
The Cowboys made 32 cuts and moved four players to the reserve/injured list to trim their list from 89 to 53.
For length, let’s jump into the players who have been a part of the organization or had a chance to make the team before the news today.
We all have heard or seen most of these players a time or two.
I will be honest, though a few names I knew nothing about.
Notable Names
- Jabril Cox
- Malik Davis
- Chuma Edoga
- Matt Farniok
- Simi Fehoko
- C.J Goodwin
Guys like Cox, Fehoko, Davis, and others were waived.
Therefore they are subject to claims.
In case you’re wondering, the difference between being “released” or “waived” has to do with a player’s years of NFL service.
Once you become a vested veteran after four years, you aren’t subject to the waiver system until late into the regular season.
Take a look at the tweet below from Patrik Walker a writer for the Dallas Cowboys.
His tweet outlines those who were released, waived, put on IR and traded.
As you should know by now, Kelvin Joseph was traded yesterday afternoon to the Dolphins for Noah Iginoghene.
A handful of these players if they make it through the waiver claims, we should see the Cowboys resign to the practice squad.
Personal favorites
With the 53 man roster final, I have a few players I was rooting for over the last few months.
The first was Jalen Brooks.
Wow, did he come out of nowhere or what?
Brooks came into his own once the pads got put on. His route running and play on special teams is what landed him on the final 53.
Deuce Vaughn. I am so happy he made the intital 53-man roster. He is electric every time he touches the ball.
In two preseason games, Vaughn carried the ball 13 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
No way teams should have let him slip to the sixth-round. When he gets to the second level, he becomes impossible to tackle.
Vaughn is behind Tony Pollard with Rico Dowdle and fellow rookie Hunter Luepke.
Malik Davis was cut, so it seems the team has it’s back field for the 2023 season.
Last but for sure not least, my favorite to make the 53-man roster was undrafted T.J. Bass.
I have been a fan of this guy the moment Dallas brought him in.
The former Oregon Duck had 80 snaps in pass protection, not a single one resulted in a pressure on the quarterback behind center.
How this dude went undrafted, I have no idea.
Football is finally here, and this might my favorite Cowboys team in a long time.
Remember though, NFL rosters are never set. You could be on the team on Monday, and be cut on Tuesday.
Appreciate making the team, but don’t STOP doing what you did to get there, This team is going to be fun.
