The Dallas Cowboys hosted their first home game of the season in week two, and it seems crazy that week two of the season is already a must win, but the Cowboys grinder out a 37-20 win over the Commanders.
After a great start by the Cowboys offense, a 17-3 lead disappeared very quickly as the Dallas defense still couldn’t find a way to get any stops.
As you look around the league, you see teams finding ways to get off the field and the Commanders seemed to do whatever they wanted outside just a few drives early, and it’s the same story as a year ago.
The Cowboys’ offense scored on 7 out of their 8 possessions of the game. Read that again, the offense did what it needed to do regardless of who was in the game for the Commanders.
Dak Prescott finished the day 26/31, 279 yards, 4 touchdowns and zero turnovers.
The defense is still the issue.
The Cowboys’ offense has to be absolutely perfect in order for them to win games, and look around at the games, others don’t need 30-plus points every week to win ball games!
After what felt like a first half dominated by Dallas, the game started to change when the Commanders decided to go for it on the last play of the half instead of taking the three points to cut the lead.
Where Things Changed
If you did not see what happened to Jayden Daniels, take a look at the video here. The Cowboys took a 17-10 lead into the half. Let’s be honest though, that is on Dan Quinn.
The Commanders’ offense moved right down the field, and they should have taken the field goal to cut the lead by getting the ball to start the second half, and this injury would never have happened for them.
One thing I noticed is that the Cowboys’ defense creates no negative plays.
When Dainels had nothing available, he found a way to get to the second level and run for nearly a first down every single time. Even though Marcus Mariota seemed to move the ball with ease and even had a touchdown called back that shouldn’t have been.
Either way, the Cowboys and Commanders traded field goals to start the half, and the Dallas defense finally forced a turnover which led to Dak Prescott finding Jake Ferguson to extend the lead to 27-13.
Prescott tied Tony Romo for the most passing touchdowns in Cowboys history with 248 on that touchdown pass and would later pass just a few minutes later.
Even though the Commanders missed an FG on their second drive of the second half, it still felt like the Commanders could do whatever they felt like doing.
A major issue with the Cowboys offense is that they are struggling early to run the football. That is something they actually did very well a year ago, and maybe the injury to Tyler Smith is not helping with that, but Javonte Williams could not find his way to the second level.
As the Cowboys entered the 4th quarter up 30-13, the defense played way too soft and allowed the Commanders to score a touchdown within the 9-minute mark, to cut the lead to 30-20. Every single time you look up, guys are running wide open all over the place!
The offense was able to close the door with a touchdown pass from Dak to Lamb, who had a massive day with 153 yards and two touchdowns.
Save me with the ‘what ifs,’ the coaching for the Commanders going for it on 4th and goal at the end of the half is why they lost the game. Dan Quinn costed his team points and costed the team their quarterback.
At the end of the day, the defense has to find a way to get some stops, and get some sacks, but regardless, this is the offense the Cowboys need to show up every single week, but they need to run the ball better!
