The Dallas Cowboys got in the win column over the weekend with a win over the Washington Commanders, 37-20, but as good as the offense and Dak Prescott was, the running game and Javonte Williams is still struggling a bit.
When you have two great wide receivers outside, you would think it would make running the ball a little bit easier, but through two weeks of playing, the Cowboys only have 71 yards on the ground, which is only around 3.8 yards per carry.
The couple of times that Williams did have a nice carry into the secondary, he was called back for holding, one on George Pickens near the end of the game and the other was in the second or third quarter.
Biggest Issue?
We will all have our own thoughts and opinions, but it is hard to pinpoint the exact reason why the Cowboys running game is off to a slow start.
The first week against the Giants was mainly because, in the second half, the offense only had the ball twice, scored two touchdowns and did not need to run it very much.
My guess is that the loss to Tyler Smith is really showing more in the ground game than the passing game. Sure, Dak has been sacked a few times, but most of the time, he can get through his reads well enough and get the ball out.
The running game, though, has clearly been a issue without Smith, and with possibly two games without him still, it would be great if they could get it figured out, but we are probably going to have to deal with it being a dud right now until he returns.
Yesterday, Williams ran the ball 12 times for only 30 yards, with a long of 9 yards.
Remember, Malik Davis got put on IR last week with a hip injury, and the new face Emari Demercado only carried the ball three times for 8 yards. They have no change of pace back behind Williams, a team always needs that, and right now the Cowboys do not have that.
The Cowboys will travel to Rio to take on the Ravens, who got stunned this week by the Saints. It is crazy to see how these teams that everyone crowns to be so good after one week get beat.
This league is truly a week-to-week league, and I am not going to harp to much on the running game if Dak Prescott and the rest of the boys are playing the way they are playing.
The defense continues to struggle, so a major weapon for Dallas would be to be able to find a way to get the running game back on track and grind out some longer drives and keep the defense on the sideline so you don’t have to worry about them being out there all too much.
The Ravens run defense has been pretty good the last two weeks. Even after losing to the Saints this week, they only gave up 65 rushing yards, and 23 of those came from Tyler Shough, who carried the ball 15 times as the quarterback.
They scored 15 unanswered points in the 4th to win the game 24-17.
Either way, it was much better this week in terms of what we saw from the offense and even when Jayden Daniels went out, the Washington offense still kinda had their way, but the Cowboys’ offense scoring 37 was a great sign even with a bad outing from the ground game.
Look for 11 personnel against the Ravens to try and get Williams going early and keep the ball out of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. That only spells bad news for the Dallas defense, even though they did not look that good today.
