It’s no secret how important kickers are in the National Football League (NFL). Field goals can make or break a team’s season. Dallas Cowboys fans are well aware of that notion.
The Cowboys currently don’t have a kicker under contract as former Kicker Brett Maher remains a free agent.
It is no surprise that the Cowboys would wait and look at other options after Maher’s disappointing performance in the 2023 NFL Playoffs.
In the Wild Card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Maher only made 1 field goal out of 5 attempts. This performance altered the Cowboys play calling against the San Fransisco 49ers in the divisional round.
Arguments could be made that had Maher had the team’s trust, then the Cowboys would have elected to kick the field goal on 4th down at the 49ers’ 35 with 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter.
There’s no denying that Maher was money in the regular season.
However, in the playoffs, he wasn’t.
The Cowboys need a kicker they can trust. Especially in crunch time and in the playoffs. Who else but Robbie Gould?
After playing the last 6 years in San Fransisco, Gould would like a change of scenery. One that comes with the contention for the Super Bowl. Where else but Dallas?
Gould told media days after the 49ers loss against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Conference Championship game that he doesn’t plan on re-signing with the Niners.
When asked about retirement Gould stated he still has a lot left in his career. Number one unchecked accomplishments? A Super Bowl Ring.
Gould’s 29 makes with not a single miss in the playoffs is a historical feat, as he holds the record for best kicker in playoff history.
Gould also ranks as the 49ers’ best kicker in their history with 21 postseason field goals. He also holds the longest streak of field goals made without a miss (33 attempts) in the 49ers’ history.
In his career, Gould is 8th in NFL history with an 86.6% accuracy on field goal attempts.
For kickers, he ranks 8th all-time with 447 made field goals and is ranked 10th all-time with 1,961 points scored.
Maher’s career field goal percentage is noticeably lower compared to Gould’s. Maher’s percentage stands at 80% even. Gould also has a career spanning 17 years and counting. Compared to Maher who has netted four years in the league so far.
If the Cowboys are serious about contending for a Super Bowl, signing Robbie Gould is the move.
You’re only as strong as your weakest link and in the 2023 playoffs kicking was the Cowboys’ Achilles heel.
Adding a proven veteran like Gould to the roster makes the Cowboys an even scarier team. Especially when Gould claimed he still has multiple years in him as a player.
Gould should look nowhere else but Dallas, as they will be contending for the Super Bowl for the next few years.
A match made in heaven, the Cowboys need to go out and sign their kicker of the future. Gould would look good in the famed Cowboys jersey.
