Having a talented roster is one thing. Knowing how to use that talent is another. That’s hopefully going to be the difference between Jason Garrett and the Dallas Cowboys new Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
Sadly, Jason Garrett was never able to take full advantage of the talent the Dallas Cowboys were able to put together during his time as the HC. There’s a lot of hope and optimism Mike McCarthy can get the job done, but there’s no way of knowing that right now.
The Dallas Cowboys have been able to put together yet another talented roster for the upcoming 2020 season, however, we’ve been down this road before. All the hype and build up heading into the season has unfortunately ended in bitter disappointment. That’s hopefully something that changes with McCarthy, but how far can he take them?
I think just about anybody would be happy if Mike McCarthy led the Dallas Cowboys back into the playoffs in 2020. That should be easy enough with the new playoff changes. They don’t even have to win the NFC East division to accomplish this feat.
I personally have my hopes set a little higher. I’m hoping Mike McCarthy and the coaching staff he’s assembled can do better than just get back to the playoffs. In fact, I would be a little disappointed if the didn’t at least make it to the NFC divisional round.
I know I’m setting the bar high, but what can I say… I’m a natural born optimist. Putting my optimism aside, let’s try to be a little realistic about this. It’s been years since he Dallas Cowboys made it to the NFC divisional round (2014, 2016, 2018) and all of those appearances resulted in losses. It’s been even longer since they made it past the divisional round, way back in 1995.
Maybe Mike McCarthy’s the answer to the Dallas Cowboys playoff woes. Maybe he can keep them from being an early exit like they’ve been under the tutelage of Jason Garrett. After all, that’s why he was hired wasn’t it!?
McCarthy has been there and done that in the NFL. He’s got the jewelry and trophy to prove it. It’s that championship mentality Jerry Jones and Company are hoping he brings with him to Dallas. But the question remains, how far can he take the Cowboys this year?
I really don’t know how far Mike McCarthy will be up to take the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. No one does. They’re just way too many variables that have to be considered right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, not even mentioning the challenges he has to go overcome in his first year as HC in Dallas. All of that unknown makes predicting anything with any kind of accuracy nearly impossible.
I don’t know about you though, but I’m really hoping Mike McCarthy is right man for the job. It would be nice to see the Dallas Cowboys take advantage of the talent they’ve put together for a change. Hopefully McCarthy is the coach to do just that (fingers crossed).
