Well, the Dallas Cowboys are 1-1 on the season, and it is not because of their defense. In fact, they have only forced two punts to start the year, and it might be worse than a year ago, which is crazy to say.
They have more talent, yet they can’t get off the field, and with that, the injuries are now mounting because they are spending so much time trying to stop the offense on the other side of the ball.
The Cowboys were already down DeMarvion Overshown against Washington this past weekend, but the struggling secondary took a hit in the win over the Washington Commanders.
• Offense back on track in the passing game
• Struggles in the run game worry me long term
• Defense looked better, but far from perfect
• Injuries starting to pile up
• Some rookie mistakes from Caleb Downs and Jaishawn Barham, but
Locke & Durant
Cobie Durant suffered a hamstring strain in the first half, causing him to miss the second half, and P.J. Locke was also ruled out quickly.
He was seen walking with a protective boot on his right foot after the game. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Locke tore the plantar fascia, which is a band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes.
I know nothing about that type of injury, but Schotty said a torn plantar fascia, from a recovery sense, is arguably better for a football player than dealing with a partial tear.
Remember, Overshown and Malik Hooker are already injured. If last year showed us anything at all, this defense can’t get stops with the starters on the field, so what do we think that the depth guys are going to be able to?
The worst thing about it is, it is too early for teams to want to start dumbing down players and look to trade guys. Maybe you call the Miami Dolphins and see if Dante Trader will be available, but he is another safety, not a cornerback that this team is going to need if Durant is out for a while.
Both Locke and Durant are going to miss at least two weeks for sure, and the Cowboys season is very well going to come down to whether they can survive without them, and it starts with the Baltimore Ravens in Rio on a playing field that is rumored to be in horrible condition, because well, that place isn’t meant for football!
The issue going on right now is that the best player for Dallas in the secondary has been a rookie in Caleb Downs, and the best linebacker has also been a rookie in Jaishawn Barham.
This season has already been filled with injuries around the league, and it truly sucks that we are watching these happen all the time. It seems to have been worse early in the year this season than I can remember.
Either way, as long as the guys on the offensive side of the ball are upright, the Cowboys are going to have a chance every single game.
They are going to have to score nearly 100% of the time, but they are going to hang around if they do not have leads, and if I was them, I would try and take the ball first every single time after the coin toss.
Next up is not ideal with the Ravens and their run-heavy offense in Lamar Jackson and Henry, but take a look around the league, they just lost to the New Orleans Saints. This league is truly week to week, and you never know what is going to happen.
This season is already off to a really odd start, and with this game being in Rio, I do think the defense is clearly going to be bad, but with the offense the Cowboys have they are going to be able to play with anyone and everyone, at this point with the injuries on defense.
DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring)
Cobie Durant (hamstring)
Malik Hooker (forearm)
P.J. Locke (foot)
If I was Christian Parker, I would just start unloading with blitz, and everything else, try and speed the other offenses up and force them into mistakes. That might be the only chance they have.
