I hate to be the bearer of bad news, or good news depending on how you look at it, but this could be Jason Garrett’s last training camp as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Shrug your shoulders if you want or scream in excitement, but there’s no denying Garrett’s job is on the line this year.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know all too well 2019 is the final year on Jason Garrett’s current contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Replacing Garrett as the Cowboys HC has been a highly discussed topic for years now, but it finally looks as if it could actually come to fruition in a short amount of time.
For a lot of Cowboys Nation Garrett’s firing couldn’t come soon enough. There’s a large majority of fans who want to ignore all of the questions about “if” he should be fired and want to focus more on “when” it will happen. Well, depending on how the 2019 season goes his firing could come sooner rather than later.
Personally, I see this as a crossroads for the Dallas Cowboys. Despite all of the mistakes Jason Garrett has made over the past nine seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys, he still helped build and turn this team into the talented, competitive unit it is today. He’s not alone accomplishing this of course, but he does deserve just as much credit.
It’s going to be really difficult for Jerry and Stephen Jones to walk away from someone they truly believe in as much as they do JG. After all, the Cowboys do have four consecutive winning seasons, back to back playoff appearances, and have won the NFC East division two seasons in a row. But still it doesn’t seem to be good enough, does it?
Jason Garrett has been a good head coach. It’s his failure though to get past the Divisional Round in the playoffs that currently has his head on the chopping block. It’s all about taking the next step, and it’s quite possible the Jones’ faith in Garrett’s ability to do so is wavering.
Unfortunately for JG, anything less than a NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl appearance could cause the Jones’ to sever ties. That is after all “the next step” all of us are hoping for, if not expecting, because of the current talent on the Cowboys roster. The bar and expectations have been raised due to that talent.
Anyway you look at this, Jason Garrett’s back is against the wall this year. It’s those times when you have nothing to lose in which we sometimes find the inspiration to persevere. Maybe that will be the case for JG this season, but we’re going to have to wait to see how all of this plays out.
The Jason Garrett saga is going to be really interesting to watch throughout the 2019 season and no matter how this plays out, the finale is sure to be an epic one.
