Mike McCarthy’s balanced attack is paying off for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are 2-0, and both games weren’t even close.

We all know what happened in the Giants game, and yes, the Jets didn’t have Aaron Rodgers, but all I heard after their week one win with Zach Wilson was how bad they would make Dak Prescott look.

After forcing Josh Allen into four turnovers, that was the talk of every national media outlet.

That ended quickly.

With that said, at least after two games, we need to give head coach Mike McCarthy some credit.

Now, it’s only been two games, but man this looks so much better than a year ago.

The balance the offense has right now is awesome.

Prescott is taking care of the football while being efficient, and Tony Pollard and the others are running hard.

Kellen Moore seemed to want to throw the ball over all the place when it wasn’t warranted.

Like yesterday, the Chargers offense was 2-for-14 on third down, including a three-and-out when they got the ball first in their overtime loss against the Titans yesterday.

McCarthy and the Cowboys’ offense was 9-for-19 on third down because he didn’t put them behind the sticks outside of once or twice.

Say what you want; when you watch this offense, you can see how much better balanced this it is than last year.

Prescott started the game with 13 straight completions, finishing 31-for-38, 255 passing yards, and two touchdowns.

The Cowboys had 134 yards on the ground on 44 carries. Tony Pollard had a career-high 25 carries.

CeeDee Lamb led all receivers with 11 catches for 143 yards.

Balance

ESPN analyst and former Steelers star Ryan Clark yesterday on Get Up said McCarthy was “excellent.”

“The game plan was excellent. The speed in which you got the plays in was excellent. The way that Dak Prescott was able to see the field.”

Folks who STUDY the game and do it for a living see the same thing.

Yet, after another dominating performance, this fan base wanted to focus on the ONE bad throw Prescott made out of 38 of them.

Enjoy a 2-0 start and the fact this team has outscored their first two opponents 70-10.

Red Zone work

The one problem seen from this is the red zone offense.

Yes, Prescott missed one throw yesterday in the corner, but he is trying to get cute with a tight-end reverse and an outside pitch to Turpin, trying to get the edge.

The hold on Tyron Smith also wiped out a touchdown in the second half.

Overall, it has been an excellent start for McCarthy as the play-caller.

They all know they will need more touchdowns, but the way they moved the ball up and down the field on a top-5 defense yesterday was great.

That was also without Brandin Cooks, who was out with a knee issue but will be fine.

They weren’t going to need him against the Jets, and I would sit him against him again this week against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cowboys will clearly start to face tougher teams as the season goes on, but with that defense and a balanced offense, they can compete and beat anyone.

Week five will give us a true color of what this team is made of when they go on the road to San Francisco.
