NFL draft week is finally here and the Dallas Cowboys are still sitting with two first round picks later this week.
If you didn’t see over the weekend, a huge move was made by the New York Giants when they traded All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence in exchange for the 10th overall pick held by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2026 NFL Draft.
That is going to kill any chance Dallas had of drafting Caleb Downs or Sonny Styles with that pick or moving up to get one of them, so now what?
Here are three things that I think the Dallas Cowboys do this week. Remember these are MY thoughts. You don’t have to agree, because at the end of the day nobody has any idea what they are going to do.
NYG gets premium draft compensation, Cincy gets a lynchpin, while Sexy Dexy gets a new, big-money extension.
Stay Put
So the first logical thing to do is stay put with the 12th and 20th overall pick. Don’t trade up, or trade back, just keep them, and take the best defensive players available when their pick is up.
I still think Dallas can get Mansoor Delane with the 12th overall pick.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the only team I would be worried about drafting, and with the shakeup with the Giants getting a second top 10 pick, they very well could go offensive line and then Kansas City may take-Downs instead of Delane.
So, the first thing Dallas should think about is just staying here, and don’t be pressured to try and move up just because New York did.
Dillon Thieneman
The second thing I think the Cowboys might do this week during the draft is take a swing at either 12 or 20 for Dillon Thieneman. If Delane gets drafted, this is the pick at 12.
The issue is, I think he MIGHT get to them at pick 20 as well. This team needs every bit of help in the secondary and, heck, if they get Delane at 12 and Thieneman is sitting there for the taking at 20, don’t even think about it, turn the card in right away.
He earned a 91.0 grade in his lone season at Oregon and an 89.5 grade in his best season at Purdue. He has also earned grades above 90.0 in both run defense and coverage at various points in his college career.
Drafting these two guys would be my dream now that Downs and the others are probably out of the picture, but again, we all have no idea what this team is truly going to do, or if these players will even be there!
Hope he is an option for Dallas at 12.
We know how wild these drafts sometimes get and players go way too early or some slip to your team in the perfect spot.
Trade Pick 20
The last thing I think Dallas might do or could do, but is my lowest on the totem pole, is trade pick 20 for more picks in this draft.
After what the Giants did, I just don’t see Dallas trying to trade up in this draft. If anything, they should trade the 20th overall pick, and try and get some 2nd and a few more 3rd round picks.
They currently only have a day two pick from the trade with the 49ers a little over a month ago.
If their board runs a little bit dry after they make their 12th pick and the guys they wanted are no longer there for the 20th pick, I would try and get rid of it as fast as they can.
Get some more picks and try and get depth for this defense. The last thing I want them to do is waste a pick on the offensive side of the ball, when they need to worry about the defense and how bad it truly was a year ago.
