I pushed this to the side for over a month or so, but after the Myles Garrett news and the way the Cowboys’ defense has shaped out over the offseason, it seems like to me that bringing back the team’s leading sack leader from a year ago sounds like a no-brainer, yet Dallas has not done so.
From what it sounds like, the front office won’t be doing it either.
The former first overall pick has not lived up to that, but for what the Cowboys need and what he showed a year ago, it just does not make any sense to me as to why Dallas has not tried to re-sign him as he still does not have a team.
Over 13 games (six starts) and 373 defensive snaps, last year, Clowney recorded 41 tackles, 12 TFL, a team-high 8.5 sacks and four passes defensed.
Along with Clowney’s solid traditional stats, he ranked as Pro Football Focus’ 16th-best edge defender out of 119 qualifiers.
Still A Need
In my opinion, the Cowboys’ biggest weakness still on defense is a pass rusher who can at least compete to win one-on-one. Look at the current guys they have who are going to rush the passer. Do they have that right now? No.
We kind of know what Rashan Gary is. We have no idea what Donovan Ezeiruaku will be in year two coming off hip surgery, and Malachi Lawrence is a rookie from a small school.
Cloweny led the team in sacks a year ago after they traded Micah Parsons away, and he clearly is buying his time on whom he wants to sign with, so maybe the Cowboys have reached out, he is just waiting.
Before his season in Carolina, Clowney had a one-year stop in Baltimore in 2023. He put up a career-high 9.5 sacks as a Raven, so he is still proving that he can produce at a really solid level, and Dallas, with a bunch of young pass rushers, need a guy like him to help out.
Re-signing him would do nothing but help. It’s a low-risk and high-reward type deal for what you are getting in him.
I did plenty of looking around before even making this post, but haven’t heard so much as a rumble on what his plans are or what is going on with him.
We have heard since the draft that the Jones family is content with what they have. Take a look at the video below, but how can you not look at what the Rams just did this week by trading for Myles Garrett and not think to yourself, wow, we should probably add whatever we can to help our team win football games?
It really makes no sense to me. I love the Rams doing this because if I was a fan I would praise the front office. Look, I want this team to win just as much as anyone and if you can help your team win it all right now, do it.
Dallas has a window, and it is probably the next two years, maybe three, if all the guys can stay healthy.
It just stinks when, although the Cowboys have been the most productive this offseason than in the last 20 years, when you see a team like the Rams who know they have a window to win with Matt Staffard, they make moves happen to give them a chance.
I love the Cowboys not having any drama this offseason for once, but man, a simple move like bringing back Cloweny makes you better than you were yesterday and it is not even a debate.
