We are oh so close to the start of the regular season. Next Sunday Night, the Dallas Cowboys will travel to take on the New York Giants in the first night game of the year.
A lot has happened this summer and I think it would be a good time to dive into some of that. I think this season could go very well, but it won’t matter until they make their mark if they get into the playoffs, which they should.
Still, I think a lot is on the line for a number of players, we have to admit that Jerry Jones did his job this offseason for the first time maybe since I was born back in 1996. With that said, I want to list a few players/positions that I think in my OWN thoughts could make or break the season.
Dak Prescott
We have to start at the top. Dak is coming off one of his best years, and with Schotty they should only get better. He first needs to have another healthy year, and then he just needs to keep doing what he has been.
Yes, I understand the dude needs to win the playoffs, but let’s stop acting like it is so easy to win in this league. Everyone wants Lamar, he can’t win when it matters, the golden boy Justin Herbert. Look up how he did in the playoffs the last two times he was there.
Nonetheless, I fully expect Dak and the offense to play at the level they did a year ago. It won’t be perfect at times, but the offense will be good enough if the defense improves at all next year.
I think the most important guy will clearly be Dak Prescott and at times he is going to have to play like he did against the Packers, Eagles and Chiefs games last year. He can do it, just give it to us 90% of the time.
Say what you want, a fan of his or now, look around the league, you have to have a guy that can play at this type of level if you even want a chance. Why do you think the Dolphins had to fork out 20 million a year for a guy in Malik Willis who has thrown SIX career touchdowns?
Caleb Downs
Look, I did not want to put a rookie on this list, but the way the media talks about him, I feel like we have to?
Downs is said to be the best overall player in the draft, but because he plays safety he slipped, and somehow Dallas got him, and I am as happy now as I was on draft day.
When you look at the odds on the defensive side of the ball, Downs currently has the third-best odds to win defensive rookie of the year behind Rueben Foster Jr. and David Bailey.
Downs is going to be asked to do a lot of things that a typical rookie would be asked to do when you step onto the football field in the regular season week 1, and honestly, I trust him more than most people probably will.
I think Downs has a very strong chance to be the first player since Micah Parsons to win defensive rookie of the year for the Cowboys.
I will tell you this, I am not adding the cornerback room to this list, because they are the WORST unit on this team, they just have to be better. I have talked about them 10 times already.
Offensive Tackles
I could have gone two ways here, the overall pass rush of the football team or the offensive tackles, but this is where I am going.
The Dallas Cowboys offensive tackles have been a question mark since the start of the summer, and it did not get much better. Good for Tyler Guyton earning his spot, but man, Terence Steele is not good, but remember the owner paid him that contract after one decent year and now here we go.
They traded for Steelers Broderick Jones, and he is supposed to be competing for the starting job, but I am not buying it.
The reason why this is important is that they have to protect the blind side of the quarterback, and if this does not work out, they are going to be in major trouble.
I would be here all day naming players and positions, but let’s see how the season starts next Sunday.
