Round 1, Pick 28

There wasn’t much in between from Dallas Cowboys fans when they decided to use their first-round draft pick on Taco Charlton. You either loved the pick or hated it. I however am somewhere in between.

The Cowboys absolutely had to address the defensive end position in this draft and do it early. Charlton was the highest rated DE left on their board at 28 and has the upside to be a destructive player in the NFL. There were other players that I liked better here, but I can’t fault the Cowboys going with a player with Charlton’s potential.

Charlton may be a year or two away from reaching his potential, but he has the prototypical size and length to play the left or right side in a 4-3 defensive scheme. I don’t know if he is any better than what the Cowboys currently have on the roster, but I have faith that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli can get the best out of him.

Based on the fact Taco might not be able to be a starter as a rookie and still has a way to go in his development, I’m going to give this Cowboys draft pick a Grade B+.
