Could Troy Aikman Join the Dallas Cowboys Front Office?

If you’ve been following NFL media news recently, you have surely heard about the ongoing saga between former Cowboys legend Troy Aikman, Joe Buck, and ESPN; if you have missed the story, here’s the general rundown.

In the spring, ESPN extended Buck, perhaps the NFL’s most prominent announcer, to a six-year, $108M deal — Aikman, his partner for 25 years, was not approached for an extension.

ESPN’s Joe Buck has agreed to a new contract with the network worth more than $100 million that will keep him as the voice of “Monday Night Football” into the next decade, per @AndrewMarchand.

He is a “free agent” after this season, and Buck’s deal was not announced until late summer, which has apparently led to a personal beef between the pair that boiled over before the Monday Night Football game on October 12th.

It now seems this all-time broadcast duo is destined to split, with Aikman having to find a new place to land in 2027. If you can believe it, Jerry Jones butted into the situation, which leads us to the topic of the story here.

Could Jerry Jones & Troy Aikman Team Up Again?

Following the widely reported Buck-Aikman story, Jones was asked about it during an interview on 105.3 The Fan and praised the former Cowboys QB, saying, “There’s nobody more qualified” than he is — it’s important to remember, also, that the Miami Dolphins agreed with that assessment.

Jerry Jones says he has been following former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman’s comments on expiring broadcast deal. When asked about the possibility of Troy shifting to front office work, Jerry expressed confident in his ability to succeed there:

When the Phins were looking for a new general manager and head coach this offseason, Aikman was used as a consultant for the search. He’s no longer in that role, and an official deal was never signed, but he has now been involved in front office decision-making.

Aikman, in response to the implication by Jones, told Mike Fisher that he’d be happy to sit down with his former boss and talk about a role within the organization.

Specifically, he said, “I’d have a hard time not looking at that.”

This is obviously all speculative, and way far in the future, but Aikman is going to need to start grappling with a job search pretty soon. This ESPN drama doesn’t feel like it has a light at the end of the tunnel, and Dallas is in need of change as they continue to flail this season.

Now, we know Jones will never relinquish the GM/President role, and Stephen Jones enjoys immense power as well as director of player personnel, but a “Senior Advisor” kind of title would make sense.

Troy Aikman is a great football mind, which would make this a sensible move, but it would also bring a slew of headlines with it, and that might be the most alluring aspect for Jerry Jones.
