We watched a little Dallas Cowboys history during tonight’s game as Dak Prescott broke Tony Romo’s 10-year-old career passing touchdowns record as a Cowboy. Drew Bledsoe is the next guy he will pass from the NFL career passing touchdowns list.
Prescott had to take over the offense because the running game is non-existent right now. And we watched Dak deliver four touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 37-20 win over Washington, bringing Dak’s career touchdown total to 249.
Dak was efficient and effective tonight, completing 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards, giving us a record-setting afternoon and a win.
The career touchdown total puts Dak first in Cowboys history and 30th on the NFL career passing-touchdowns list. The next quarterback to be passed is another Cowboys quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, who is sitting at 251.
Another four touchdown game in Brazil against the Baltimore Ravens next week and Prescott will move to 29th, and there are several more names within reach after that.
I want the Dallas record to give Dak Prescott some bragging rights among Dallas quarterbacks, but the national list gives all of us something to follow beyond one Sunday, especially with so little room between the quarterbacks ahead of him.
Dak Prescott and Tony Romo Pulled Away from the Rest of the Pack

Behind Dak and Romo, Troy Aikman ranks third with 165 touchdown passes. Danny White is fourth at 155, followed by Roger Staubach with 153, Don Meredith at 135, and Craig Morton with 80.
When I saw the gap between Dak Prescott and Troy Aikman being at 84, it goes to show how much the game has changed since the glory days of Cowboys football.
Aikman, White, and Staubach are all within 12 of one another, while the two most recent longtime starters have separated themselves from the pack by a large number.
Like I said before, the game has changed and that can be seen with this record. Offenses change and the raw total stats don’t tell you what a quarterback was asked to do during his time at the helm.
Still, that’s a lot of scoring from two guys who have taken all kinds of heat in Dallas.
Now we get to sit back and watch Dak Prescott add touchdowns to his record. The next Dallas starter will have to chase whatever number Dak leaves behind, and 249 is a big number to chase.
Four Quarterbacks Dak Can Catch Next
If we look at the NFL’s quarterbacks career touchdown list beyond Drew Bledsoe, there is Dan Fouts with 254, Sonny Jergensen’s 255, and then Derek Carr at 257. Prescott needs six more touchdowns to pass Fouts, seven to pass Jergensen, and nine to pass Carr.
That’s a manageable stretch for us to watch this season. A few good games could move him past several great players. Passing retired players is one thing, but he will have to keep up the pace to stay ahead of some active players.
The Active Players Dak Will Have to Catch and Stay Ahead Of
The quarterbacks that are still active are Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and Kirk Cousins. These are three great quarterbacks who are still adding to their totals, but where do they sit?
Aaron Rodgers is sitting in 4th on the all-time list at 528 touchdowns, Matthew Stafford is next at seven with 423, and Kirk Cousins is all the way down at 14th with 301 touchdowns.
Then outside the top 20 are Joe Flacco with 272, Patrick Mahomes at 269, Jared Goff with 262, and Andy Dalton with 254.
The guys at the top of the list will be tough to catch, but not impossible. The guys outside the top 20 besides Mahomes will be passed this season. The starters will only add to their totals. Which will basically keep the distance between these four and Dak Prescott virtually the same all season.
As we continue to watch the Dallas Cowboys this season, we need more five incompletion games from Dak Prescott. The four touchdown passes will also be needed, especially if the running game doesn’t get going.
To make his way further up the list and to stack wins this season, Dak will need to be the catalyst that keeps this team running until the running game or defense can get on the same page.
