Dak Prescott has a chance to join Drew Brees with an unfortunate stat

The Dallas Cowboys may not be in the playoffs this season, but QB Dak Prescott is having an MVP-type year.

Too bad yet another incredible season by the play caller of America’s Team will be wasted by poor roster choices and an offseason of turmoil with since-traded EDGE Micah Parsons.

All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs is gone now, too.

He was waived after not following direct orders from HC Brian Schottenheimer after the Christmas Day game in Washington, and deemed expendable.

Oddly enough, Diggs has since reunited with his best friend, Micah Parsons, after the Green Bay Packers submitted a successful waiver claim.

The scenery and culture are changing in Dallas, but Prescott remains a steadfast part of the team that fans can rely on more than any other player in the franchise.

One facet of the team that has not been reliable is the defense.

Under coordinators Mike Zimmer and Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys have managed the two worst scoring defenses in franchise history in back to back seasons.

Prescott has a chance to join Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to lead the league in passing yards while having a defense give up the most points in the league.

Brees is currently the only player in NFL history to suffer this distinction after leading the league in passing in 2015.

He passed for 4,780 yards, and the Saints defense allowed 476 points in 17 games.

Crown the Passing King

If Dak Prescott plays a full game in Week 18 at the New York Giants, there is only one player who can challenge him for the most passing yards in 2025.

Prescott currently leads the NFL with 4,482 yards passing through 17 games, and is just 34 yards ahead of the next player, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford (4,448).

Stafford and the Rams have much to play for in Week 18, as they host the 3-13 Arizona Cardinals to close out the season.

Los Angeles is fighting for playoff seeding, so expect Stafford to come out firing.

Perhaps the Rams will get out to such a large lead, that Stafford won’t play the entire game.

HC Sean McVay could decide to rest Stafford in the second half if the game is well under wraps, and he would have less of a chance to catch Prescott.

As for Dak, he usually lights up the Giants, and has not lost a game versus the division rivals since his rookie season of 2016.

New York has a pass rush now, as DE Brian Burns ranks second in the NFL with 16.5 sacks.

The Cowboys’ offensive line has been having issues keeping the pocket clean for Prescott, and they would need to tighten up and give him a chance to throw to his weapons downfield.

Getting Defensive

One area the Cowboys have lacked this season is on the defensive side of the ball.

DC Matt Eberflus takes full accountability, but that doesn’t change the fact that his defense has been a sieve, and has wasted another superb season by the offense.

The Cowboys have given up 477 points this season through 17 games, right on pace with the 2015 Saints mentioned above.

There are two teams within reasonable striking distance to steal this unwanted crown from the Cowboys, and they are two equally horrible defenses.

The Cincinnati Bengals have given up 472 points while the New York Jets have given up 468.

Cincinnati hosts the Cleveland Browns while the New York Jets travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills.

Prescott and the Cowboys defense have a solid chance to put themselves on that short list with Drew Brees, and the way things have gone this season, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
