Well, the one week of mandatory minicamp is now over and next on the list for the Dallas Cowboys is training camp, but that wont take place until late July into early August.
We are finally seeing a offseason summer without any Cowboys drama, which, let me tell you, I am not used to.
With that said, minicamp was only a week, and it is over, so I wanted to dive into MY biggest takeaways. You don’t have to agree, this is why it is my list, not yours.
George Pickens
The biggest thing that happened was Pickens showed up to minicamp when everyone and their mother said that he wouldn’t and shouldn’t, and he should wait to get his contract.
All these dudes wanted was Cowboys drama and the fact that they weren’t getting it. They couldn’t stand that things were going the right way for this team for the first time in a long time.
Pickens was there and said all the right things, and now, of course, people are trying to say he will be traded and Dallas will take calls. They are just trying anything to get clicks.
Dallas has already said they are not trading the man, and he is happy to be in Dallas, and it is football first. This was clearly the biggest and best thing that happened last week during minicamp.
Good for Pickens and good for the Dallas Cowboys.
Running Backs
Another big thing that stood out to me is I don’t think the Cowboys have any idea who the backup running back behind Javonte Williams is going to be.
As we sit, I think Malik Davis has the upper hand, but when I saw media coverage of minicamp last week, both Blue and Mafah were getting reps, and they also worked out Zamir White.
They clearly want to keep guys in that locker room and even maybe look at adding a body or two to help compete with them.
Dallas right now is saying that Jaydon Blue will be used more and should bring a spark to the offense, but until we see that actually happen, I am not sure, I will buy that.
I like what I am seeing from all these guys, but I don’t trust anyone just yet to take the lead in the backup running back role behind Williams. If he goes down, the coaching staff is going to need to trust one of these guys.
No more of this running back by committee thing, it just does not work.
Cornerback Room
Let me be honest with you, I am terrified of how this cornerback room is going to look when September gets here.
They are banking on guys that have issues with injuries just being able to return and play at a very high level.
DaRon Bland is supposed to be the team’s no. 1 CB, and he spent the entire minicamp working with the rehab team.
While he was sidelined, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr. and Caelen Carson all stood out and gained plenty of favor with new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
Bland will continue to be given chances, but with a potential out in his contract after the 2026 season, he can’t afford to miss much more time.
The good news for the Cowboys is that they can get out of that horrible deal they have with Bland after he had one great season.
the four-year, $92 million dollar deal that he signed just over a year ago. They can get out of it a lot easier than you might think they can.
The Cowboys can affordably get out of Bland’s deal in 2027, absorbing $12.9 million in dead cap space. Unless he completely reverts to the player we saw early in his career, Dallas is likely going to use that out.
