Former Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver Cedrick Wilson has been reportedly named a player the Dolphins are open to trading.
Wilson signed a three-year deal with the Dolphins as a free agent last year and is set to make a base salary of $7 million in 2023.
Barry Jackson, a reporter for the Miami Herald, was first on the news that the team would be open to trading the wideout.
A pre-June 1 trade would clear $6 million in cap space for the Dolphins, and a trade after June 1 would add another $1 million. Jackson reported that if the team could not find any takers for Wilson, the team would be just fine hanging onto him.
Miami could also cut him if they wanted, but it would not bring them any real cap relief. Therefore, a trade for Wilson would be the only way to grab him.
I don’t mind Jerry picking up the phone to see what the ‘Phins may want for Wilson.
He is a player that caught 45 balls for 602 yards and six touchdowns for the Cowboys in 2021.
Had he re-signed, he would have EASILY been the No. 2 option on this team a year ago. He only hauled in 12 passes last season for 136 yards for Miami.
I get the pushback if there is one. Seven million for a player who caught less than 15 passes a year ago, but again, what did he do in the Cowboys offense? He was solid!
The problem is Wilson is behind both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and they just signed Braxton Berrios on March 16.
Wilson will only see the field in that offense now if they spread them out. Even so, he becomes the 4th target in a loaded wide receiver room.
Still, I understand why maybe some would be against it, but it wouldn’t hurt to pick up the phone and see what Miami would want.
Wilson already has plenty of chemistry with Dak Prescott.
He was very protective and clutch with the Cowboys in 2021. Even with Kellen Moore no longer the offensive coordinator, he knows the offense well.
Wilson is only 27 years old and can likely bring better numbers to Dallas on a trade than if they draft a rookie in the second or third round.
We are still waiting to see if Jalen Tolbert can pick up the playbook and see the field this year.
I’d instead take the guy who had nearly 700 yards with the team this last time he was here.
We still don’t know if Michael Gallup will return to his usual self in 2023; with the addition of Brandin Cooks and still having CeeDee Lamb, this offense would be better than in 2021.
I give this about a 10% chance of happening. If they call about him, great, if they keep the room they have now, awesome.
This team is going to be just fine next year after adding Cooks.
They lost Dalton Schultz, but Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot will give you what he did for the price of one.
