Stephen Jones reveals plan if Cowboys lose depth at important position

When Stephen Jones spoke with the Dallas media on Sunday, he shed some light on the Dallas Cowboys’ plan for a pretty important position on the football team.

The team’s CEO and co-owner stated his belief on Monday that Trey Lance, who was selected with the third-overall pick of the 2021 draft by the San Francisco 49ers and traded to Dallas for a 2024 fourth-round pick, will be wearing a different team’s jersey in 2025.

Cooper Rush started eight games and Lance got the nod for the Week 18 finale, but the Cowboys could lose both in free agency — especially when they’ve spent the house on Prescott.

What He Said

Jones, who is in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, told reporters that developing a young quarterback behind Prescott is something the organization will look to address.

“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know where that’s going to be.

“That’s why we gave a (fourth-round pick) for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.”

Gross Draft

When I first read this news that more than likely both Lance and Rush would not return, I looked at the draft board.

First of all let me say what a WASTE of a 4th round pick Jerry and the boys used on Lance. When was the last time he actually did something beneficial for this football team?

Anyway, just looking at the quarterbacks in this year’s draft, it is weak. You have Cam Ward who will be the first QB taken and Shedeur Sanders, who in my opinion, is overrated, but will still go in the first round.

Then it is a massive drop-off. Jaxson Dart, Quinn Ewers, Kyle McCord and Jalen Milroe?Maybe the Cowboys could take Dillon Gabriel in the 6th or 7th round.

Just my thoughts, but this class is one of the weakest from top to bottom I have seen in a long time.

Outside of Cam Ward, I don’t see anyone else having the chance to become a star in this league, and if you tell me otherwise, you just hate what the Cowboys have currently, that is it.

We have to face the facts here that no matter if they draft a guy or not, we won’t be seeing them for a few years until this massive contract is up for Dak Prescott.

Whether we like it or not, and most don’t like it, and that is fine, but look around, teams continue to struggle year after year because they don’t have a guy who is at least capable of playing the position.

I honestly think this was to create a headline, because let’s be real here, the Dallas Cowboys have way more to worry about than drafting a backup quarterback.

They need offensive line, defensive line, running back, linebacker and the list goes on.

Dallas will take a quarterback like the Jones family says with Rush and Lance hitting free agency, but it won’t be until at least the 5th round.

There is no reason they should draft one within the first four. They will need to use the first 4 picks to draft a position of need and not someone who won’t see the field unless an injury happens to Dak.

2025 might be a long year if this team does not make any moves. The salary cap went up, but I expect nothing good to happen via free agents.
