Cowboys 2026 draft closes with selection of WR Anthony Smith in round 7

2

The Dallas Cowboys 2026 draft ended up after they selected Anthony Smith, a wide receiver from East Carolina University, with the 218th overall pick.

Let me first say that this is my favorite draft from Jerry Jones and the rest of the team, maybe ever.

They stuck to the plan and made sure to fill major areas of need, and even though they did not draft a starting linebacker, they traded for one, Dee Winters, who started all 17 games last year for the 49ers.

More About Anthony Smith

Anthony Smith, a small school player who started his college career at North Carolina State before transferring to ECU and was able to top 1,000 yards in his final season there.

486 of his 1,053 receiving yards came on passes over 20 yards.

He ranked among the top in the draft class for deep target rate and average depth of target, producing 14 receptions of 20+ yards and scoring five touchdowns from that range.

He is 6-foot-3 and can flat out fly, and if Geoege Pickens leaves in the offseason, maybe they use this guy just for some fly routes this season, and then who knows, maybe he can be the next WR gem, but I doubt it.

He will honestly probably see most of his time on special teams.

The Dallas Cowboys’ 2026 draft class:

1st rd: Caleb Downs, DB
1st rd: Malachi Lawrence, Edge
3rd rd: Jaishawn Barham, LB/Edge
4th rd: Drew Shelton, OT
4th rd: Devin Moore, CB
4th rd: LT Overton, Edge
5th rd: Traded pick for LB Dee Winters
7th rd: Anthony Smith, WR

Either way, this will round out maybe the best draft the Cowboys have had in years, and outside of Caleb Downs, my favorite pick was Devin Moore, the cornerback from Florida. His biggest problem is staying healthy, but if he can, he will be a great player for them.

Now that the NFL draft is over, let’s hope the rest of the team shows up to offseason workouts, and keep an eye on all of these draft picks and see if any can be day-1 starters, but great job from the front office sticking to the play and getting the guys they needed, and trading for a linebacker that can start when the season starts.
