I averaged the Dallas Cowboys Madden ratings by unit and compared the full roster with the projected starters. I think the gap says plenty about this team.
The Cowboys landed at 81 overall in Madden 27, which is just enough to start an argument.
Some fans might say EA missed badly on this ranking, but when others point out last season, they might consider the rating generous. I wanted to get past all that and see what the roster actually looked like once the numbers were broken down.
I averaged every player on offense, defense, and special teams. I ran it a second time using only the projected starters.
These are the numbers I came up with using the individual Madden 27 numbers I found on X.
Madden Unit Ratings Averages
The first-team numbers are solid, but the drop behind them is where this team could struggle in the game if injuries pile up.

Cowboys Offense: 82.4 Starter Average
The entire offense, as stated above, came in at an average of 74.5. Once I cut it down to just the projected starters, according to ESPN, that number jumped to 82.4.
CeeDee Lamb led all Cowboys with a 93 overall grade, while Dak Prescott was right on his heels with a 91. George Pickens and Tyler Smith are both rated 88, Javonte Williams lists at 85, while Jake Ferguson and Tyler Booker checked in at 82.
I actually like where those guys are ranked at, it just seems right.
I believe the struggle bus will be the bookends because Tyler Guyton and Terence Steels received 75s. While Cooper Beebe, I think, should have been higher than a 75, he is definitely better than Guyton and Steele.
Dallas would be able to survive an injury at receiver or running back, but any other position will probably doom your Franchise Mode.

Cowboys Defense: 80.4 Starter Average
I can’t say the first defensive ratings I tried to find were not Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence.
I was pleasantly surprised that Caleb Downs led all rookies in Madden 27 with an 82, while Malachi Lawrence came in at 79. Only three rookies separated these two Cowboys.
Downs’ versatility had to play a factor by being able to move around Christian Parkers’ defense.
Once I got past the rookies, Quinnen Williams led the defense with a 90 overall. Rashan Gary came in with an 84, DaRon Bland got an 82, and, surprisingly, Jalen Thompson was given an 83. After those defensive guys the next highest rated defender was Cobie Durant at 81.
At least, according to the people over at EA Sports, this defensive unit looks better on paper than last year’s unit.
I still have concerns at corner and linebacker. Several young players are going to be asked to step up, and I think Madden feels the same way because Jaishawn Barham got a 73 overall rating, only four points below Dee Winters and DeMarvion Overshown, who are the highest rated linebackers.
I think the top half has enough talent to make this work on Madden, but the lower-rated players are what drag the complete average below 74.

Cowboys Special Teams: 83.5
This average is a little skewed because it is hard to find KaVontae Turpin’s punt return rating, but his kick return rating is 95. So, I used that rating, and it got this unit from a 78.8 to an 83.5.
I found that Brandon Aubrey is an 87, and he is the second-highest rated kicker behind former Cowboy Nick Folk at an 88.
The player that I was a little disappointed with EA about was Bryan Anger, who I think is one of the best punters in the NFL, is a 79 rating. While long snapper Trent Seig is 73.
This may be the most dependable part of the Cowboys roster behind the offense, as long as we don’t count offensive red zone number.
Madden Trusts the Cowboys’ First Team More Than the Bench
As I am sure it is with most teams in Madden 27, the starters will get good ratings. I mean that’s why they are starters, right?
All these numbers tell me the top end talent shouldn’t be the problem. What will drag this team down is the rest of the roster if you have to use them in a game. Once you get past the starters, the overall rating drops well below Madden’s official 81 overall.
I can work with an 82 overall, my overall starter’s rating. What I don’t trust is how far down the bench I can reach before the whole thing gets iffy.
