Michael Trigg could compete for Cowboys TE2 role

After a very good draft from the Dallas Cowboys, they added a handful of UDFAs after, and one of the guys they signed was Michael Trigg, a tight end from Baylor.

Trigg was on a lot of the big boards, but has some serious concerns which is why he ended up going undrafted.

The first issue is he is not a good run blocker at all, and if you want to play in the NFL you have to be able to run block and catch the football.

Trigg led all tight ends in the country in drops and has shown that he isn’t the sharpest route-runner for a pure pass-catching tight end. His athleticism is what will make or break his career.

Still, Chance At TE2

Still, let’s take a look at why I think Trigg if he can keep his head right will end up the Dallas Cowboys TE2 by the middle of the year.

Trigg is known for his highlight-reel catches and elite measurable, standing 6-foot-4, 240-pounds.

His 34-inch and-a-quarter arms land in the 91st percentile among tight end prospects since 2011, and his 10-and-a-half-inch hands land in the same percentile. He landed in the 99th percentile among tight end prospects since 2011 with a longer than 7-foot wingspan.

Outside of Jake Ferguson, the Cowboys might have the worst tight end room in all of football. I am not even kidding either.

I am a big Brevyn Spann-Ford guy, but he does his job really well, and that is run block, so he is only on the roster for that reason.

Next is the guy that was a bad pick a few years ago, Luke Schoonmaker, the product out of Michigan who has not proven to be worth his draft pick.

Trigg can step in and give the exact same production that Schoon has produced over the last two years. Princeton Fant rounds out the room, but my guess is that he will be cut if Trigg makes the roster.

Trigg had 50 catches for 694 yards and six touchdowns at Baylor last season, so it is not like he is walking in as a guy who never saw the field. The issue is his maturity.

He has issues off the field, and his ability to not be able to run block and dropping easy passes are probably the main reason why he went undrafted, because it seemed like every time I looked at the screen another tight end was being drafted. 22 of them in total, so some of these issues have to be legit if nobody gave Trigg a chance.

Nearly half of them had worse seasons than Trigg, but that is how it goes sometimes.

I loved what the Cowboys did in this draft by sticking to the plan and going all defense outside of a WR in the 7th and a offensive lineman, but adding a player like Trigg as a UDFA is a huge pickup for Dallas, and if he can figure out and stay locked in, has a real chance to be catching passes from Dak Prescott this season.

This offseason is going to be a lot of fun again this season with George Pickens signing his tag and not being traded, and with adding all those picks to the defense and trading for a starting LB, Dallas should have a real chance to compete for the NFC East this season.

They won 7 games a year ago and had the worst defense in football, they will improve at least a little bit and the offense is not going to go anywhere. Let’s see if Trigg can become a one-two punch with Ferg this season because that would be fun to watch.
